Company Overview

Founded in 1997, fSONA has an exclusive license from British Telecom to manufacture optical or laser-based systems that provide short haul, high volume, ultra high-speed wireless communications in virtually all weather conditions and terrain.

A privately held corporation, fSONA is headquartered in British Columbia, Canada, and has its primary research and development center in Los Angeles, Calif. The companys primary customers are competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs), Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and facility owners and managers.

fSONAs SONAbeam products carry high volumes of digital information - voice, data, video and computer files. And they carry information at speeds as high as 1.25 gigabits per second to receiver terminals as far apart as four kilometers (about 2.5 miles).

The companys advanced systems are capable of carrying high volumes of digital information farther than most competitive products. fSONAs transceivers transmit data at speeds ranging from 155 megabits to 1.2 gigabits a second, thousands of times faster than data sent over todays wireline networks.

Since the laser connections can be aligned automatically to compensate for building sway and rough weather conditions, fSONAs transceivers can be set up quickly, often in a matter of hours. Once in place, the systems are available for use as much as 99.9 percent of the time, regardless of atmospheric conditions or terrain.

Moreover, since SONAbeam lasers operate at a low wavelength near the infrared part of the spectrum also used by television remote controls, they are certified safe for use in highly populated areas.

fSONA systems complement existing technologies such as cable, digital subscriber line (DSL) and microwave links. The systems are ideal for office parks, campus links, point-to-point private- line connections, high speed interLAN connections, or fiberlike extensions to SONET ring networks.

Currently, the fSONA product line includes four advanced optical wireless systems.

fSONAs entry-level system, the SONAbeam 155-2 is a fixed alignment system that operates at a speed of 155 megabits per second over a distance of two kilometers.

A second system, the SONAbeam 155-4 operates at the same speed, but uses dynamic beam tracking and alignment instead of fixed alignment. It will operate over a distance of up to four kilometers.

A third, the SONAbeam 622-4, will be capable of carrying 622 megabits of digital data over four kilometers as well.

A fourth, the SONAbeam 1G-4 will carry 1.25 gigabits of information over the same distance.

A number of important features that SONAbeam products apart from other optical wireless vendors. For instance, the systems - while currently carrying information at speeds of up to 1.25 gigabits a second - are designed to operate at speeds as high as 40 gigabits. Also, the SONAbeam 155-4, 622-4 and 1G-4 employ an innovative dynamic beam tracking and alignment technology that makes it possible to install transceivers in less than half an hour.

fSONA products are also highly secure, require no government licensing and can be readily deployed within hours of the availability of line-of-sight access. Moreover, fSONA systems can use any signal-scrambling technology that optical fiber can use.
