Unilab Surgibone of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, is one of the pioneers and leading companies in the world to adapt and promote the use of animal bone in neurosurgical and orthopaedic surgery. The product, Unilab Surgibone, has been used in Canada since 1975, and is now used around the world wherever sophisticated techniques are available. Unilab Surgibones can be used for lumbar or cervical fusion, vertebra recontruction and cavity fillings. Unilab Surgibones eliminates the use of autologous bone in many areas. They are absorbed into the host bone by the process known as "Creeping Substitution".
At the present the company has a plant in the U. S. where the bones are obtained from cattle, carefully inspected by the U. S. Department of Agriculture during the slaughter and processing for human consumption. There are no known cases of BSE in the U. S. Sophisticated chemical cleaning and treatments also eliminate several suspected viral infections. Unilab Surgibones are partially processed in the U. S. and then sent to the Canadian plant for finishing and sterilization, thus becoming a "Product of Canada".
More than 100 sizes and shapes are available in sterile packages, ready to use.
