Ultra Electronics Maritime Systems (UEMS) is a division of Ultra Electronics Canada Defence Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of Ultra Electronics Holdings UK plc. Formerly known as Hermes Electronics; Maritime Systems has earned a reputation as a world leader in the development and manufacture of advanced electronic and electromechanical systems for critical applications in extreme environments. Established in Nova Scotia in 1947, Maritime Systems name has become synonymous in military circles with air deployable sonobuoys having developed and produced more than two million units in nine different models for antisubmarine users worldwide. UEMS is the centre of excellence for military towed arrays in Canada. In addition to supplying passive arrays for Canadas Oberon and Victoria class submarines, UEMS has also developed active-passive and directional systems for use in complex antisubmarine warfare roles on warships. Maritime Systems advanced digital telemetry towed array is in use one the UK Royal Navys Surface Torpedo Defence System, which entered service in 2005. Aside from traditional antisubmarine warfare products, UEMS has expanded into next generation acoustic sensors for use in both homeland security and environmental protection. These include deployable passive and active multistatic sonar systems for long-range detection of underwater phenomena as well as long-life, multi-influence passive tripwire systems used for protecting harbours and other vital areas. Maritime Systems also supplies Emergency response and Incident Management software and systems and Command and Control systems for port protection applications.
