Company Description

In the early 1970s, the Cree nation of Split Lake began to suffer serious adverse effects resulting from Manitoba Hydro's Churchill-Nelson River Diversion Project. The changing water levels and flows caused periodic flooding, erosion and shoreline damage, as well as greatly disrupting the lifestyle of the community. Because of the changes that had taken place in traditional parameters, the quality of water deteriorated.

In response to these concerns with water quality, the Cree nation of Split Lake implemented a self-reliant microbial assessment system program in 1988. By 1992, it had completed a four-year monitoring and evaluation program which included the performance of simple and reliable testing procedures.

A key focus of the Tataskewayk Environmental Agency is environmental management in the area of water quality, water safety and water testing. It has developed strong capacities in this field and has also formulated a curriculum to train First Nations technicians.

Canada's International Development Research Centre has sponsored an exchange of technical knowledge of the water testing procedures between the Split Lake Cree Nation and the indigenous Mapuche people of Chile. Representatives of the Split Lake Cree Nation travelled to Chile in 1993 and assisted in developing a process to teach the Mapuche how to prepare the test procedures.

The Tataskewayk Environmental Agency is also involved in environmental audits and other fields of conservation. Consequently, it has launched initiatives to establish co-management boards which encompass fisheries, forestry, land use and tourism, with Traditional knowledge forming a central and guiding philosophy for all their activities.

Clients include international indigenous groups and First Nations, as well as the federal and provincial government.
