TRLabs, Canada's largest not-for-profit telecommunications research consortium, was founded in 1986 as an applied research consortium based on industry, university and government collaboration. Membership has grown from the original three to over 40. With revenues at $10 million, it operates research laboratories in Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Regina and Winnipeg, and has plans for growth into British Columbia. Over 180 highly motivated and skilled people work at TRLabs, consisting of staff researchers, professionals from industry, professors, graduate and undergraduate students, and technical and administrative staff. Its research program is focused on five strategic areas:
(1) Data Networking Research that focuses on ATM traffic management, multimedia applications on broadband networks, internet and multimedia applications on narrowband networks, community data repositories and source compression techniques.
(2) Network Access Research that aims at developing novel methods for enhancing the capabilities of twisted pair lines, rural internet access, methods for simultaneous data and voice services on a single pair and associated multiplexing/demultiplexing techniques.
(3) Network Systems Research that improves the reliability, performance, ease of planning and management, and cost-effectiveness of network transport and switching systems and generates new business opportunities that exploit the existing network.
(4) Photonics Research that increases the reach and /or information rate over fibre optic transmission systems by developing photonic devices that form the building blocks of photonic systems and by modelling the behaviour of the systems as a whole. Specific activities include wavelength division multiplexing, coding and modulation, Erbium-doped amplifiers, hybrid opto-electronic structures, and optical switching.
(5) Wireless Communications Research that involves the creation of novel approaches for inbuilding and 'village' broadband wireless systems, interference cancellation for CDMA, novel antennas, and GaAs MESFET amplifiers as well as channel measurement and modelling for 30, 40 and 60 GHz.
Affiliated with universities in Western Canada, TRLabs provides student training at the graduate level. Its output in People and Technology contributes to the business, research, education, and economic development objectives of its sponsoring partners. It has won national and regional awards, including a University-Industry Synergy Award given by the Conference Board of Canada and the Natural Sciences and EngineeringResearch Council of Canada and an Alberta Science & Technology Leadership Award.
