Facilities and Services: North Star Cement Limited operates a major cement production facility which has an annual production capacity of 160, 000 tonnes. Since 1966 the plant has employed a dry-preheater production process which has proven to be more efficient than the previously used wet process.
In 1986 an extensive plant modernization and upgrading was completed at the facility which resulted in increased output and a product with more uniform chemical and physical properties. The operation produces various forms of cement including Type 10 Normal Portland, Type 10 SF silica fume, Type 30 High Early and Masonry cement. As well the operation is able to provide other special cement variations to meet the specific needs of individual customers.
The Company has its own waterfront docking and loading facility for bulk and bagged cement in Corner Brook which serves as the primary distribution channel for the operation's products. The Company has two bulk cement distribution terminals, both at tide water, located at Long Pond near St. John's serving the Avalon Peninsula, and at Argentia which services eastern and southern Newfoundland. The operation also operates a specialized self unloading bulk cement barge with a capacity of 9, 000 tonnes. In addition, the operation utilizes a fleet of bulk highway tankers to transport its product to its customers.
