Queen's University School of English

Kingston, ON

Company Overview

Established in 1942, the Queen's University School of English specializes in English for Academic Purposes in a total-immersion setting. It is an intensive course of study offering between 20 and 25 hours each week of academic classroom instruction. Students attend a weekly workshop focusing on a non-academic area of English and are also expected to participate in the numerous activities designed to improve their English skills. Enrichment courses are also offered in a wide range of areas including Native Canadian Studies, Film Studies, Canadian History, and the Internet.

To assure a climate of total immersion, all students sign a formal pledge promising to speak only English at all times for the entire time they are enrolled in the program.

Housing Students have a choice of living in a private room in the university residence or with a homestay family. Both of these options are available year-round.

The Staff All of the core instructors in the School of English have advanced university training in Teaching English as a Second Language or related fields. Many of the school's instructors have worked in this program for more than ten years.

The program also has English-speaking university students who act as counsellors in the university residences, organize the activities, and direct the discussion classes.

The school has a Homestay Coordinator, an Academic Counsellor and an Activity Coordinator.

Sessions 12-week: January-April, May-August, September-December 5-week: May-June, July-August
