Prototype Equipment Design was formed in response to an opportunity to produce crystal growth stations and related equipment for Redlen Technologies Ltd. During the past four years Prototype has continued to work with Redlen and expanded to serve others such as the UVic Mechanical Engineering Department, UVic Geology Dept, Amistar Research and Development, B. L. Consulting, Roberts Plastics, Starfish Medical, Sherwood Industries and Thrifty Foods.
The focus of Prototype is to provide complete solutions specializing in scientific components and apparatus. To this end, Prototype has developed a diverse in house mechanical fabrication capability and a comprehensive electronics development shop.
The owner of Prototype, Ray Brougham has an extensive background in the mechanical field enhanced with a B. Eng. in mechanical engineering from the University of Victoria. Ray has worked as a sessional instructor at Camosuns Mechanical Engineering Technology Department teaching thermodynamics and fluid dynamics. Prior experience includes senior assignments in the pulp and paper industry such as a one year tour as maintenance superintendent in the largest sawmill complex in North America, Northwoods Houston Division in Houston BC. In addition, Ray is a Journeyman Millwright with BC and Inter-provincial trade qualifications.
Prototype presently employs two CNC machinist / programmers, two machining support persons and a mechanical/electronics technician. In addition, Prototype regularly employs coop mechanical engineering technologists. For example, over the course of the last two years Prototype has employed four coop mechanical engineering technologists. Prototype works closely with Will Spaulding on certain projects. Will is a seasoned mechanical Engineer his primary focus is teaching in the mechanical Engineering technologies program at Camosun College.
The main machining equipment Prototype has available includes a universal Deckel FP4NC milling machine, an Eikon 500B Vertical Machining Center and a Graziano SAG 210 CNC lathe with live tooling. We have recently added a Puma 240ma-turning center. These machines are fully programmable through leading edge Mastercam tool path generation software. Prototype also has manual Graziano lathe and standard auxiliary machine shop equipment such as drill presses, bandsaws, tool and cutter grinders, aluminum anodizing equipment etc.
