Porter engineered many of the advances in sophisticated software used in determining the best method to break down long logs in bucking systems and short logs at primary breakdown. From the earlier methods of Look-Up Tables to the Real Time Solutions of today, Porter has led the industry in providing a complete package of Optimization and Process Control for log breakdown. It is estimated that over 70 percent of Western Canadian logs have been scanned with PEL systems.
Porter has recently entered the southern USA market with sales to Weyerhaeuser and Champion International.
'RT2 - Real Time for Real Trees' is a world class software program that runs on the VME based Motorola line of processors.
'RT2' is in use in most of the largest mills in Western Canada for primary breakdown on machines such as Sharp Chain Reducer Bandsaws, Chip-N-Saws and End Doggers, as well as for Bucking Systems in both Linear and Transverse Merchandisers. Solutions are generated in less than a second, as thousands of combinations of boards and cants are evaluated to yield the highest value products. The resulting sets are sent to the linear positioners via the PLC and Setworks to position the chipperheads and saws as well as set the appropriate feedspeed. In some cases, logs are processed through Chip-N-Saws at feedspeeds of up to 500 fpm.
