London, ON
History:
In 1969, Philips established a manufacturing presence in Canada by purchasing the Service Lamp Company of York Street in London, Ontario. Early in 1970, a new manufacturing facility was constructed at 552 Clarke Side Road. Production at this location started in October 1970 and since then over two billion lamps have been produced. Products:
Production in the London plant is focused on standard incandescent lamps. The plant uses fully automated production groups imported form Philips in Holland. More than 60 percent of its product is exported to the United States with the remainder going to the Canadian market. Exports to other parts of the world are also not uncommon. The London plant has made lamps for Australia, Cuba, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Venezuela, West Germany and Holland. Quality:
The major actions in London's four year plan are the involvement of its people through the Philips Quality Improvement System in customer satisfaction, standardization, automation, training and speed increase.
Logistics:
Geographically, London is well positioned to serve densely populated areas like the east coast of the United States (New York, Chicago and Detroit), as well as Canada with high volume lamps at a low transportation cost.
