Norwest Labs operates ten laboratories in four Canadian provinces. The company employs over 230 people including scientists, information services specialists and laboratory technologists.

Since its inception in 1975, Norwest Labs has assisted in both the environmental and agricultural industries with quality testing services.

Initially specializing in soil research and reclamation for the mining and petroleum industries, Norwest Labs now provides quality analytical services in a wide variety of area including environmental soil analysis, water quality analysis, air analysis and industrial hygiene, microbiology, drilling and hazardous waste assessments, feed seed, fertilizer and food analysis, as well as environmental microbiology, toxicity bioassay services and field rental equipment. Norwest Labs also provides hydrocarbon, oil and gas and coal analysis through its other company, Chemical and Geological Labs.

Our dedication to excellence allowed Norwest to receive accreditation by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) in 1985; Norwest was the first environmental and agricultural laboratory to obtain this status. Accreditation from the Canadian Association for Environmental Analytical Laboratories (CAEAL) is also maintained by Norwest Labs.

Accreditation criteria include the adequacy of administration, human and physical resources, quality control procedures and freedom from conflict of interest. Accreditation by all relevant federal and provincial agencies remains an active and ongoing goal for Norwest Labs.

  We can provide toxicity testing in a well-controlled laboratory environment using a number of organisms from different trophic levels. Norwest Labs will also treat the waste with various amendments in order to detoxify the waste by various physical, chemical or biological means.

  These methods provide the user one or a number of alternative procedures for field treatment. The assessment of toxicity in the field can also be carried out using portable instrumentation. The equipment can be placed in a mobile office or laboratory. Samples can be tested at various locations to determine the volume of material affected and to reduce the number of chemical analyses by using Microtox testing as a 'screening' tool.
