Company Overview

Sales: $70.0 million; Exports: $50.0 million; Employees: over 600

NRI Industries Inc. was founded in 1927, and is North America's largest fully integrated manufacturer of industrial and automotive rubber products. The company's strategic advantage is its ability to recycle scrap rubber into commercialized value-added materials that are fully integrated into the manufacturing stream.

From two manufacturing facilities in Toronto, Canada, the company produces a wide range of industrial and aftermarket products from the most basic rubber sheets and mats to more complicated moulded parts like industrial tire segments. The company also manufactures over 500 automotive parts, such as fender guards, sound and vibration insulators, and air baffles. The automotive parts division represents roughly 70% of annual sales.

The company is QS 9000 and ISO 9001 certified and recognized as a high quality, innovative supplier to Chrysler, Ford, General Motors and Nissan. NRI Industries has been endorsed as a world leader in the recovery of rubber for the use in automotive parts and tire manufacturing.

In response to a forecast, world-wide reduction in the availability of low cost scrap rubber, the company initiated a unique, government/industry partnership to solve the problems of material supply and waste tire management. The development of the tire recycling unit and the proprietary rubber recovery technology is the result of eight years of research and development. NRI Industries continues to spend more than 6% of annual sales on ongoing research and development into the science and technology of rubber recovery.

NRI Industries operates a Tire Recycling Facilities in the Port District of Toronto, Canada. Each facility has the capacity to produce over 3 million scrap tires a year. In 1995, NRI Industries Inc. was recognized by the Recycling Council of Ontario and presented with the Ontario Waste Minimization Award, in the Outstanding Green Industry category.

NRI Industries is 90% owned by Clairvest Group, a Toronto-based merchant bank whose shares trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange (CVG).

Technology Profile:

Leading Edge Technical Solutions - Symar Technologies

Symar-T represents a breakthrough with recycled rubber crumb incorporated into a thermoplastic matrix. This TPE exhibits performance characteristics associated with rubber, such as durability, sound adsorption, and toughness. As well it can be processed on conventional plastic injection molding equipment.

Symar-D allows a further increase of scrap rubber content in blends with post-industrial waste through a proprietary process of rubber crumb thermo-mechanical modification.

  • Tire Recovery Technology To Produce Value-added Materials From Scrap Tire.

NRI Industries Inc. provides unique technology to recover rubber and produce value-added material, plus the expertise to integrate these materials into rubber parts manufacturing. This ensures an economically sustainable business solution to a significant problem.

NRI Industries Inc. tire recovery technology is the world's most integrated approach to solving the problem of scrap tires. The technology consists of separating tires into their component parts, modifying and recovering the material, and re-integrating the output into parts manufacturing. This recovery system is very flexible and can be adapted to local market opportunities and specific manufacturing needs. It is this fully integrated strategy to solve regional scrap tire problems which distinguishes NRI Industries Inc. from all other tire recyclers.

The Tire Recycling Unit (TRU) thoroughly separates the crumb rubber, steel and fibre, all of which can be reused or sold on the market. A proprietary technology modifies the granulated rubber into new, higher value material - SYMAR-D, SYMAR-T..

The Symar family of tire derived material, is partially depolymerized rubber which can be used in a manner similar to virgin rubber in industrial and automotive parts manufacturing.

The average tire recycling facility can process roughly 3-5 million tires/year.

In addition to being economically sustainable, the tire recycling facility is environmentally suitable to be located in urban areas, adjacent to large supplies of scrap tires. The plants are clean, tires are stored inside, the noise is buffered by specially designed interior walls, and no emissions from the processing are released into the atmosphere.

The company will make its technology and know-how available to international markets by developing facilities that the company will operate, or on a partnership basis.
