COMPANY BACKGROUND Microplex Systems was founded in 1978 by Fred Fierling, the company's President and CEO. The company initially concentrated on the design and manufacture of synchronous communications systems for specialized wide area network applications such as modem/port sharing devices, modem eliminators and synchronous link adapters. In 1990, the company started a new chapter, shifting its focus to network print servers for local area network (LAN) environments. Microplex was the first company to introduce a low cost TCP/IP print server to the market. Since then, Microplex has enjoyed great success, manufacturing several generations of print servers plus adding multi-protocol focus. Microplex's mission is to be the market leader in the design and manufacture of innovative and high quality multi-protocol network application servers.
THE MARKET Since the introduction of standalone print servers in 1991, the market has undergone considerable change and growth. In the early stages, print servers supported a single protocol, typically Novell or TCP/IP. The inherent benefits of print servers soon led to the demand for multi-protocol support into their products, followed by AppleTalk and more recently Windows including Windows NT and Windows'95.
Users also began demanding more features in their print servers and again, Microplex responded by adding greater functionality and flexibility. The print servers of today bear little resemblance to the print servers of fiveyears ago. The print server market has witnessed significant growth over its short history. All indications are that market growth will continue as more users realize the value of installing print servers. Industry experts agree that despite the number of print servers sold to date, less than 20% of all printers are currently networked and by 1998, almost one half of all printers sold will attach to a LAN.
