Medinorm Ergonomic Kitchens. Most work in the house is done standing; and on an average 3.5 hours per day are spent in the kitchen alone. What about those who have to perform their tasks sitting down on a chair or in a wheelchair? Whit all this in mind, Medinorm has developed the Ergonomical Adaptable kitchen. Ergonomical is a word that is derived from Greek, with ergo meaning work and normos meaning law or rule. In general it can be defined as the purpose to harmonize the human being and the work performed by him/her, the tools used, and the conditions they are used with one another. For example, the work place or environment fitted to the person performing the task, rather than the person adapting to the average.

For the development of the Medinorm ergonomical kitchen systems the human being and his/her qualities are put in the centre. After years of research and testing, Medinorm has developed a kitchen which can easily be adapted to persons with different capabilities and or disabilities. Medinorm kitchens, which were developed in the Netherlands, have been in actual use for 18 years. Research and development continues on a day to day basis, working together with occupational therapists, etc. We have received top rating by Consumer Bureau testing in the Netherlands (GMD-RIM, Medical Services and Rehabilitation Institute). Yet we have standardized most of the components in order to keep cost reasonable, without sacrificing usefulness, adaptability and quality. Every function was taken in consideration:

1-Ability to change the height of counter and cabinets 2-Drawers and doors that will open and close with minimum amount of effort. 3-Handles designed for easy grip 4-Special sinks, double and single bowl, with drain located at the rear; sinks with slanted sides for those with limited capacities and so that dishes can be pushed up our of the sink, or for straining a pot. 5-Single levered mixing faucet 9.5' handles. 6-Special designed pullout working areas. All cabinets are manufactured with easy to clean and maintain materials.

Medinorm has developed four (4) different height adjusting systems;

1-Electrical: Just by the push of a button or remote control, the counter with, sink, cook top and top cabinets can be raised or lowered in a matter of seconds. Length of counter and top cabinets 10'6' (max.), with height adjustments approximately 10'. Ideal for training evaluation purposes or when more than one person with different capabilities are using the same kitchen. 2-Same as above, but top cabinets are stationary. 3-Numbers 1 and 2 are available in straight-line or L-shaped kitchens with an approximate length of 8' x 6'. 4-Height adjustable brackets: A kitchen of any size an shape can be designed for the system, and yet have the capacity to be converted to a standard type kitchen in a matter of a few hours of labour and some simple tools. Open spaces can be filled with standard components. Ideal for senior citizen housing and rental housing, where only one person is using the kitchen. It gives the flexibility to change the unit over to wheelchair use or back to standard.

Through innovative design and the use of modern technology, Medinorm has not only designed a very functional kitchen but also an attractive looking kitchen with all the conveniences of a modern kitchen. It was designed with more than the average person in mind. Studies have proven that the Ergonomic Kitchen is of great need for today's style of living.

• Base Cabinet

  These are constructed out of 1' plywood with the front edge slightly raised and a special designed back splash. Laminated or stainless steel finish.

  Designed specifically for the disabled. Easy to grip handles and mounted on roller slides for effortless operation.

• Kitchen Faucets

  All are single levered, temperature and flow limiting settings. The handles are 9 1/2' long. Available as counter mounted with or without pull out spray head. Vanity faucet handle is 4 1/2' long.

• Laundry

  Washers and dryers with front load and controls mounted on the front face.

• Lubidet

  Lubidet- Personal cleansing. Portable bidet which mounts on all standard toilets. Heats the water it uses and has warm air blower for drying.

• Pantry Cabinet

  With adjustable shelves, shelves an sliders or wire surrounded shelves on sliders: 50, 60, 70 cm

• Sinks

  Double and single shallow sinks with drain at rear, horizontal drain pipes, bowls 4 //4' deep. A single sink with 2 sloped sides and drain board, for those with limited lifting capabilities. Flexible water supply and drain lines.

• Special Items On Request

  It is our aim to design adaptable kitchens and bathroom vanities with every disability in mind, that can also be converted back to standard units. Minimum available height of kitchens and vanity is 25' (63 1/2 cm) counter height with the use of standard cabinets.

• Upper Cabinets

  With adjustable shelves, cabinets are mounted on special brackets for easy adjustments of height. These cabinets come with swinging of sliding doors. Height: 58 & 69 cm (23' & 27') width: 30, 40, 50, 60 cm ( 1 door), 80, 90, 100 cm (2 doors)
