St. John's, NL
The Marine Institute is a world-class centre of advanced marine technology and education. Guided by its motto, 'Ad Excellentiam Nitere - Strive for Excellence', the Marine Institute's mandate encompasses education and training, applied research, and technology transfer. The Marine Institute is recognized nationally and internationally.
It occupies a state-of-the-art facility in St. John's, offering a wide range of technical education and training courses, diploma of technology programs and Bachelor and Masters degree programs.
As such, the Institute is unique in Canada and is one of very few institutions in the world dedicated to a wide scope of education, training and applied research in support of the marine industries.
The Institute has also provided technical support to industries within the fisheries and marine transportation sectors through a number of specialized units, including the Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources, the Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development, the Centre for Marine Simulation, the Offshore Safety and Survival Centre and the Safety and Emergency Response Training Centre.
Applied research and technology transfer functions of the Marine Institute are facilitated through these units, each of which is specifically targeted at an industry sector, and operates in close co-operation with its target sector. A suite of world-class facilities have been developed to support the institute's work. Specialized facilities include: marine simulation facilities, an offshore safety and survival centre, a firefighting and aviation firefighting centre, a fleet of training vessels, the world's largest flume tank, and a fully equipped and licensed seafood processing plant. Within its immediate vicinity the Marine Institute also has access to a range of complementary research and development facilities. These include: the National Research Council of Canada Institute for Ocean Technologies, the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Centre, the Marine Sciences Research Centre, and the Centre for Cold Ocean Resources Engineering.
As a result of its provincial mandate for the delivery of fisheries, food technology and marine education, the Marine Institute has a history of innovative distance delivery. In response to a call for a significant level of fisheries-related training, the Institute worked in partnership with governments, with the regional colleges and with organizations representing fishery workers, to deliver a wide variety of courses to thousands of individuals in their local communities. This community-based initiative relied upon the short-term training of local instructors and made use of traditional materials distributed from St. John's as well as available through the web.
The Offshore Safety and Survival Centre (OSSC) is a centre unique in North America. Professional and quality safety programs are offered relating to land, marine and aviation disciplines. The Centre offers over 100 safety courses including Basic Survival Training (BST), Helicopter Emergency and Response Training, Fast Rescue Craft Training, Oil Spill Prevention and Control, Offshore Fire Team Training, etc. The Centre assists the fire fighting and offshore safety and survival industry to meet international certification requirements and specialized industry needs. The Centre strives to serve industry, marine, and onshore fire fighting professionals through emergency training and response and the improvement of marine survival technology.
The Marine Institute's Centre for Marine Simulation boast a full mission ship's bridge simulator, a ballast control room simulator, a marine engine/control room simulator, a simulated electronic navigation simulator, a dynamic positioning simulator, and a global maritime distress safety system simulator. The Centre trains personnel to meet routine and emergency situations through simulated training, which allows students to learn in a realistic, controlled environment. The Centre is involved in the development of new vessel management techniques and in marine industry research including equipment testing, testing of operators, crew familiarization, and the development and testing of operational procedures. The facilities are also used for research into marine safety, behavioural research, and port development studies. In conjunction with industry, the Centre develops joint programs and seminars to disseminate information about operational innovations and new technology.
