KBR, is a wholly owned subsidiary of KBR Inc. of Houston, Texas, which in turn is owned by Halliburton Company, a public company traded on the New York stock exchange. Headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, KBR has operated continuously for over fifty two years as a resource centre, reporting to the Engineering & Construction business unit of KBR Inc. In Houston. We are essentially a General Industrial Contractor with contracts almost exclusively firm price industrial plant work by invitational tender. As such we are one of the largest firm price industrial contractors in Canada.
We provide construction services exclusively to the industrial sector, with the vast majority of our business in the petroleum related industries. The majority of our site Construction activities are performed on a direct hire basis. We normally direct hire in the major disciplines, the noted exception being electrical which we subcontract. We are certified with most of the AFL-CIO Building Trade Unions and employ labour from within their membership.
We also provide process piping fabrication services through our 5-bay, 8, 000 ton per year fabrication shop in Edmonton. Incorporating the latest state-of-the-art in welding technology, material management, and quality control process; we believe it to be one of the most efficient and quality oriented shop in Canada. Combining both field construction and shop fabrication capabilities, we fabricate and assemble process plant modules in a dedicated yard at our facilities and have completed over 1, 500 modules in the last twenty years.
We are a self-contained operation with the resource infrastructure necessary to support field and shop operations, including quality assurance, safety, procurement, construction equipment, warehousing, payroll, and administration departments. We are proud of our dedicated and experienced permanent staff, with average length of service of 15 years.
KBR in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada has been a strong participant in the construction of most of the major projects in Western Canada some of which are; the Syncrude and Suncor Plants in Fort McMurray; the Ethylene Plants 1, 2 & 3 for Nova Chemicals at Joffre; the ESSO Cold Lake Production Facilities Phases 1 through 10; the Dow Chemical Petrochemical complex in Fort Saskatchewan; the Imperial Oil Stratchona Refinery in Edmonton Alberta and the Shell Canada Ltd. Refinery and Styrene Plant at Scotford, Alberta. We are also involve in the construction of some of the major pulp mills in the province such as the Alberta- Pacific Forest Industries, the Daishowa-Marubeni International Pulp Mill and the Slave Lake Pulp Corporation.
