International Submarine Engineering Ltd. (ISE) was able to combine its knowledge of robotics, computer vision, and control to develop an autonomous robotic refueling system for automobiles; the Shell Smart Pump TM. The Shell Smart Pump TM uses pneumatic and electric actuators to autonomously refuel an most automobiles built since 1987 using conventional fuel and a specially-made gas cap. ISE completed the design and manufacture of the Shell Smart Pump TM prototype, which was installed in Sacramento, California in March, 1997. The system was used successfully with the public during initial testing, and will be mass produced in the near future.
ISE successfully designed and built an autonomous refuelling system for the Shell Oil Company called Smart Pump, which has been field tested by the general public in Sacramento, California.
Since 1992, International Submarine Engineering Research Ltd. (ISER) and the Defence Research Establishment Atlantic (DREA) of the Canadian Department of National Defence have worked together to develop a large Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) for laying fiber-optic cable in ice- covered waters. This development led to the design and construction of Theseus, a 10.7 meter long, 1.3 meter diameter, 8600 kg displacement AUV. Theseus successfully laid 220 kilometers of fiber-cable from a site near the shores Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic to a scientific acoustic array in the Arctic Ocean about 200 kilometers from shore.
