Sub-sectors: Municipal solid waste management; landfill gas greenhouse gas; acid rain.
Products/Services: Project development; engineering and design; construction and commissioning; operations.
Company Description: Eastern Power is a privately held, 100% Canadian owned company which develops, owns and operates landfill gas power plant. Eastern Power has developed and now owns and operates electricity generating plants at two landfill sites near Toronto, Ontario, Canada. With a combined net electrical capacity of 55 megawatts, these plants burn landfill gas to produce electricity.
Since 1991, these plants have achieved on-line availabilities in excess of 95% and have paid substantial royalties to the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto which owns the landfill sites. Geographic Marketing Activities Best potential in G-7 countries (Canada, USA, Germany, Japan, France, Great Britain, Italy) as well as highly developed urban centres in developing countries.
Alliances/Contacts Sought: Owners/operators of Municipal Landfills with capacity of waste-in-place of 5 million tons or more.

Landfill gas typically contains 40-50% methane and can therefore be used as a fuel in boilers, reciprocating engines and gas turbines. Landfill gas flow rates are a function of: local climate; age, quantity, and composition of waste; site design features; and efficacy of the gas collection system. Since landfill gas production rates generally increase as waste is placed and decrease after site closure, any gas utilization project must be initiated as early as possible in the tipping life of the site.
Eastern Power has successful experience in all aspects of landfill gas utilization projects and is willing to work as consultant, builder, owner or operator.
The environmental benefits of recovering and using the energy available in landfill gas include:
Reduced Odour and Explosion Hazard: Once landfill gas becomes an economic resource, there is stronger incentive to collect the maximum possible; power plant operators trend landfill gas collection rates in real time such that any upsets causing reduced flow of landfill gas can be responded to quickly before odour problems occur;
Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Landfill gas contains 40-50% methane which has a global warming potential of 24.5, e. g. by completely combusting it a 24.5 times reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is achieved; if the electricity generated from landfill gas also displaces other fossil fuel fired generation (eg: coal fuel oil or natural gas) up to a further two times reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is achieved;
Acid Rain Reduction: Landfill gas typically contains less than 50 ppm sulphur and therefore if the electricity generated from landfill gas displaces other fossil fuel fired generation with higher sulphur content (eg: coal with 1-4% sulphur) then large reductions in sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions are achieved.
Eastern Power has experience in all phases of landfill to electricity projects:
gas production studies;
technical and economic feasibility analysis;
negotiation of key contracts;
preparation of business plan;
securing financing;
obtaining municipal land use approvals;
obtaining environmental permits;
conceptual and detailed plant design;
equipment procurement;
construction;
commissioning;
operation.
