RADARSAT remote sensing and GIS applications
An environmental impact assessment for both the pulp mill and plantation was undertaken to identify potential environmental impacts of the project and to develop recommendations for the mitigation of negative environmental impacts. The impact study required the collection of data, followed by interpretation and subsequent assessment of existing environmental parameters (soils, water, air, fisheries, wildlife, vegetation). The identification of ecologically sensitive areas was undertaken in association with social, cultural, economic and environmental impact assessments. A thorough review of existing services and infra-structure was undertaken. Environmental monitoring and management plans were developed.
The proponent required a comprehensive EIA to determine impacts associated with both its existing shrimp farm complex and a possible future expansion of the farm. The study involved extensive field monitoring programs, the assessment of land, freshwater and marine resources in the area, and an evaluation of the potential impact of the project on these resources. During the course of the program, mitigation plans were developed for assessed impacts.
Through global warming, the mean sea level could rise, and this phenomenon would directly affect the society and economy of certain coral islands. In order to facilitate the protection of the natural environment and the livelihood of people, the Hatfield Group was commissioned to develop an integrated environmental action plan to address these concerns. The scope of the project was to prepare a comprehensive environmental management plan that would clearly identify steps needed to minimize the short and long term impacts. The plan incorporated effective preventative measures, telecommunications needs, loss reduction techniques, training programs and other attributes necessary to inform people and prepare them for appropriate reactions. The study included institutional development, marine biology, disaster mitigation, environmental economics, collection of relevant biological information, review of existing environmental studies and preparation of impact analyses.
