The Edmonton office opened in 1977 and was the head office of RL&L Environmental Services Ltd. prior to RL&L becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of GAL. The Edmonton office became part of Golder in July 2001 and is proud to be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
The Edmonton office currently has 27 full-time employees. Services are offered in aquatic environmental biology, terrestrial ecology, hydrogeology and water resources engineering. Areas of specialization within each field are:
FIHSERIES -fisheries and aquatic ecosystem research on large rivers and remote environments;
-impact assessments of hydro power and water management developments;
-development of project mitigation strategies, environmental protection guidelines and environmental inspection services;
-assessment of the effects of forest harvesting, mining, pipelines, and other land use activities on fisheries resources and aquatic habitat;
-development, implementation and assessment of fish habitat restoration and enhancement strategies;
-limnology and water quality sampling; including aquatic invertebrate, dissolved gas and sediment monitoring for regulatory standards;
-use of radio, ultrasonic, archival and GPS data acquisition for fish habitat studies;
-information programs and technology transfer for fisheries and aquatic environmental protection.
HYDROGEOLOGY -definition of baseline hydrogeologic conditions;
-design and installation of groundwater monitoring networks;
-construction of geologic and hydrogeologic models;
-numerical modelling of groundwater flow and contaminant transport;
-acid mine drainage, flow through unsaturated waste rock;
-preparation of documents for regulatory approval; and -hydrogeologic investigations for water supply included water supply for municipal and industrial purposes.
TERRESTRIAL AND WILDLIFE SERVICES -biophysical inventories including wildlife, vegetation and soils inventories;
-wildlife baseline surveys, impact assessments, mitigation planning and monitoring;
-vegetation and wetlands baseline surveys, impact assessments, mitigation planning and monitoring;
-ecological land classification, soil and terrain mapping and land capability mapping -strategic management planning including forest certification (Sustainable Forest Management Plans, CSA);
-environmental protection planning including caribou protection plans;
-development of reclamation strategies and monitoring reclamation areas;
-ecological risk assessment;
-wildlife and rare plant habitat modelling, Population Viability Analysis for wildlife using RAMAS GIS;
-wildlife habitat modelling, population modelling and cumulative effects modelling using ALCES; and -traditional knowledge studies for ecosystem management and cumulative effects assessment.
WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING -river engineering, erosion analysis, and the design of erosion protection;
-bridge waterway engineering, including river engineering and hydrology;
-river bank protection design, erosion and sediment control, culvert design, regulatory applications.
