MetalSCAN - Oil Debris Monitor
MetalSCAN is a full-flow, on-line oil debris monitoring system that when installed to any pressure lubrication machinery system, can detect 100 per cent of the metallic particles that pass through it. The sensor provides early warning of bearing or gear damage thereby reducing the occurrences of unplanned outages or in-flight shut-downs.
Major features include:
particles;
failure.
Born out of the successful qualification through Pratt & Whitney, to design, develop and supply an on-line, oil debris sensor for the US Air Force's F/A-22 Tactical Fighter (aka the Raptor), MetalSCAN is now standard fit to all F119 engines.
Since the success of the F119 engine, MetalSCAN has expanded into the other military aircraft applications, including the F135 engine for the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) as well as civilian aircraft.
MetalSCAN is also offered in the industrial market, specifically for industrial turbine engines and gearboxes. The industrial variant of MetalSCAN enjoys wide-spread success with over four million cumulative running hours on hundreds of applications worldwide.
Condition-Based Maintenance
With over 23, 000 employees, 30, 000 megawatts of installed generating capacity, $8.9 billion in annual revenues, and almost $40 billion in assets, Ontario Hydro ranks among the largest utilities in North America. Looking for ways to improve maintenance effectiveness at its nuclear generating stations, Ontario Hydro initiated an Integrated Maintenance Program and selected GasTOPS to assist them.
A key requirement of the improvement strategy was a structured approach to the reassessment and definition of what maintenance actions should be performed against plant equipment, and a desire to emphasize a Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) approach where justified. CBM has been shown to reduce long-term maintenance costs while improving equipment availability. GasTOPS has been supporting Ontario Hydro in this effort through the provision of specialist engineering services and maintenance software tools.
The first step in the maintenance reassessment was to identify the in-house maintenance requirements for targeted equipment considering its operational context, failure modes, and the effects of failures. This required the application of the optimum mixture of scheduled, corrective, and on-condition maintenance. For this, a Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) methodology was adopted. GasTOPS completed detailed RCM analyses on 6 plant systems and high level analyses on approximately 20 others. The project has now expanded to apply RCM/CBM to 24 critical reactor systems in all units at all Ontario Hydro nuclear sites. GasTOPS' RCM Analyst software tool was instrumental in conducting these analyses.
Implementation of the CBM program has been accomplished through the use of GasTOPS' MAINSTAY software tool, which integrates various types of CBM data in a single database system and provides comprehensive data analysis capabilities including calculations, automated trend analysis and statistical analysis features.
A unique aspect of the re-engineering work performed by GasTOPS has been the development of effective condition indicators for the failure modes which can be managed by a condition-based maintenance approach. A systematic engineering process has been employed to define these indicators and qualify them for use in the day-to-day equipment maintenance programs. Maintenance re- engineering is well underway at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, with plans to expand the program to all of Hydro's Nuclear Stations later this year.
