Fort McPherson Tent and Canvas was established in 1970 by the Department of Economic Development and Tourism to stimulate employment in Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories. This community, located above the Arctic Circle is a Gwich'in First Nation community with approximately 800 residents.
The goal of this community based enterprise is to create quality products for export and and to deliver value to the consumer. By achieveing this goal, Fort McPherson Tent and Canvas can generate employment and attain self-sufficiency for Aboriginal people living and working in the community. Its philosophy combines local traditional skills with current manufacturing and production methods. The result is quality workmanship that reflects individual attention and at the same time preserves the integrity of the cultural heritage of Northern Aboriginal people.
The shop produces a wide selection of products from canvas tents, to cordura nylon travel bags, to custom sewing projects. The assembly of the tent and bag products are reminiscent of Gwich'in women sewing techniques used in the past to make moccasin and traditional clothing.
In 1992 a new 7000 square feet factory was built to increase production capacity by 100%. Export sales are handled through Arctic Canada Wholesale located in Yellowknife.
