In 2000, Ericsson demonstrated the world's first live multiparty link-up of WCDMA pilot sites across seven countries, including: Canada, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden and the UK.
In 2001, a unit for the WISE Portal was established in Montreal. This portal is a mobile portal solution that will provide network operators with the flexibility to tailor a portal according to their own market and end-user preferences.
A new platform with wireless Internet readiness, called JAMBALA, was developed in teh Montreal R&D facility and will enable operators to inroduce new services faster and facilitate targeting of niche markets. There are currently over 12 million subscribers on 64 live installations of JAMBALA nodes at 31 operators in 21 countries and 4 continents.
Rogers AT&T Wireless Microcell Telecommunications
In January 2001, Ericsson was chosen as the exclusive supplier for Rogers AT&T Wireless third generation (3G) network rollout. On July 9, 2001 Ericsson completed the installation of the GSM/GPRS wireless network in 25 markets across Canada. The second phase of network construction is now underway.
In December 2000, Ericsson signed a two year supply agreemetn with Microcell to provide GSM core products to meet their network expansion plans. Eralier in teh year, Ericsson and Microcell Connexions Inc. entered into a multimillion dollar purchase agreement for the supply of a new high-speed wireless data system based on GPRS technology. Ericsson has more GPRS commercial agreements than any other supplier. The first GPRS call in Canada was placed on November 9, 2000 at Microcell Connexions premises in Toronto.
