Pickering, ON
Sub-sectors: Water and waste treatment
Products/Services: Filtration, reverse osmosis, ion exchange equipment for water treatment; chemical and metal recovery systems
Company Description: Eco-Tec designs and builds water treatment, and recovery systems which purify water and help to solve environment problems around the world. These systems are used to remove suspended and dissolved solids from water, reclaim 'heavy' metals such as copper, nickel, and chrome, purify the acids that are used in metal treatment processes, or remove contaminants from amines used in hydrocarbon processing systems.
Power generation, pharmaceutical production, electronics manufacturing, oilfields, mining, electroplating, aluminum anodizing, and steel finishing are examples of markets that use Eco-Tec systems.
Utilizing an advanced ion exchange process called Recoflo, complete recovery systems often include other technologies which Eco-Tec has either developed or licensed from around the world. In addition to recovery applications, Recoflo is used for water purification, particularly where large volumes or high purity are important. The high efficiency Recoflo process reduces capital and operating costs.
A private company with 80% of the shares being employee owned, Eco-Tec is self-funded. Exports to the U. S., Europe, Japan, the Far East and India account for 90% of total sales. Eco-Tec prefers to sell rather than to license its technology and to market directly to end users. The company has been active in Europe for 15 years, with a manufacturing facility in the U. K.
Incorporated in 1970, Eco-Tec Limited has developed a broad range of products based on the Recoflo ion exchange process. Its companies include:
Eco-Tec Inc. - Located in Pickering, Ontario, Canada, this central location houses engineering design, manufacturing, sales, customer service and support staff. The development of new products is based on the latest separation technologies, using comprehensive analytical laboratory and pilot plant facilities. Eco-Tec Inc. serves the Americas and the Far East.
Eco-Tec (Europe) Ltd. - From its U. K. location, ETE manufactures systems specifically designed to meet the needs of its European and Middle Eastern clients.
Eco-Tec systems are used in a wide variety of industries including power generation, pharmaceutical, electronics, mining, plating, steel (stainless, tinplate, electrogalvanized) finishing, aluminum (architectural, coil, lithoplate, aerospace) finishing, pulp mills, and mineral (hydrometallurgical) processing. Typical examples of Eco-Tec's abilities include recover/purification of mineral acids and concentration/separation of dissolved metal salts.
Recoflo water demineralization systems are used in the power generation, pharmaceutical, electronics, automotive and chemical industries, and anywhere else that high purity water is essential.
Over 1000 systems have commissioned in 45 countries around the world. While Recoflo ion exchange is the heart of the most systems, Eco-Tec employs chemical processes such as evaporation, membrane crystallization, electro-winning and micro-filtration to offer complete solutions. Treatability studies, installation services, on-site supervision, training and a customer service hotline available 24 hours a day are all part of Eco-Tec's offering.
Eco-Tec has been recognized for its achievements with a number of awards including the Canada Award for Business Excellence in 1991 and as one of Canada's 50 Best Managed Private Companies in 1995 and 1997. Eco-Tec is ISO 9001 registered.

Bench and pilot scale chemical separations process development using advanced filtration, ion exchange, membrane, electrolytic and thermal processes
Solutions consisting of inorganic acids (sulphuric, hydrochloric, phosphoric, nitric) and dissolved metals (iron, nickel, copper, aluminum, etc.) are often discarded by industry. The cost of replacing these acid or salt solutions is significant, yet the high cost of waste treatment is often a more important consideration. The Acid Purification Unit (APU) separates the metals from the acids, for reuse, using only water. No other chemicals and virtually no energy are required. The acid-metal separation process is now justified in a large number of applications that were not previously considered.
The benefits are: reduced acid consumption; reduced waste treatment; reduced labour costs; reduced production downtime; more uniform production quality; increased energy efficiency; low operating, capital and installation costs; compact size; full automation and high reliability. Maintenance costs are minimized through the use of corrosion-resistant components.
Filters, Reverse Osmosis, Demineralizers, Softeners
Ions in solution are exchanged for other ions that are contained in synthetic ion exchange resins. By passing the solution through columns of cation and anion exchange resins, all the ions can be exchanged, leaving only hydrogen and hydroxyl, which combine, leaving pure water. Alternatively, by suitable choice of ion exchange resins, a selected portion of the ions can be removed.
The system's many advantages include reduced equipment size, lower capital and operating costs and superior performance. RECOFLO is one of the most significant advances in ion exchange technology in the last two decades.
