Cathode quality problems due to the high level of impurities in the anode copper experienced by Falconbridge soon after the start-up of the Kidd Creek copper refinery led to the development of the Kidd Process. One of the unique features of the Kidd Process technology is the absence of wax or edgestrips to mask the bottom of the cathode blank. Copper plates around the bottom of the cathode blank allowing both sides to be handled as an envelope. In 1992, Falconbridge began offering the Kidd Process technology to the copper industry through their representative, EPCM Services Ltd. Kidd Creek currently produces 103, 000 tons annually of LME grade A copper. THE CAROUSEL STRIPPING SYSTEM as applied at Kidd Creek
Cathode Wash: The cathode wash system is fed through an infeed conveyor loaded by the tankhouse crane. This system utilizes a recirulating wash followed by a clean water rinse. The washed cathodes are then fed into the carousel.
Automatic Cathode Stripping Carousel: The cathode stripping machine consists of a revolving carousel equipped with eight cathode fixtures, suspended 45 degrees apart. There are seven processing stations, four of the stations perform specific actions on the cathodes, three are for loading, unloading and rejecting cathodes. The carousel rotates each cathode in sequence to the stations.
Copper Deposit Processing: Copper deposits stripped form the permanent cathodes can be stacked immediately of further processed in optional equipment. Options include an inline sample punch, the corrugation press, and automatics strapping, weighing, and labeling of bundles.
