Company Overview

As one of Alberta's leading contractors, CANA is fully active in all segments of the construction industry. CANA's staff of up to 200 employees are highly qualified individuals who believe in a TEAM APPROACH to every project. CANA's experience and TEAM APPROACH, has been enormously successful with all assignments showing a strong record of performance.

In 1942, Red Dutton, Reg Jennings and Bob Burns founded Burns and Dutton Concrete and Construction Company Ltd. primarily for the purpose of providing concrete work for the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. In 1970, the Company was renamed CANA Construction Co. Ltd., and in 1985, CANA Limited was incorporated as the 'parent' company.

CANA's 55 years of expertise is apparent in the numerous major projects completed. While achieving success in all areas of Canada, CANA is most proud of it's Calgary projects including the award winning Calgary International Airport, Petro Canada Centre, and the Canadian Airlines (Olympic) Saddledome. Other prestigious projects include the Banff Springs Hotel Conference Centre, Bow Valley Squares 1 to 4, Calgary Centre for the Performing Arts, Calgary Convention Centre, Spruce Meadows, Rockyview General Hospital, Delta Bow Valley Hotel, Nova Head Office Building, Trimac Head Office Building, Telus Building, the Harry Hays (Government of Canada) Building, Tom Baker Cancer Centre, and both the Southern and Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditoriums.

CANA's Mission Statement is to provide efficient, client oriented, quality construction services and solutions. CANA is totally committed to completing all projects on time, on budget, and with the highest level of quality, safety and service.

CANA works closely with clients and designers during the Pre-Construction phases of a project providing planning, cost estimating, scheduling, design analysis and alternate methods and materials. This service reduces costs and enhances the overall effectiveness of a project, without forsaking architectural integrity or function.

This TEAM APPROACH continues through to construction and allows the client to make informed decisions based on all the information available. Fully equipped computer centres and sophisticated networking allow for timely reporting and accurate scheduling. CANA Crane & Equipment Ltd. provides all CANA projects with construction equipment thus enhancing the ability to achieve timely project completion.

The success of the CANA TEAM APPROACH is best exemplified with the 1995 / 1996 renovations to the Canadian Airlines (Olympic) Saddledome. Working closely with the National Hockey League Calgary Flames Hockey Club, the Saddledome Foundation, and design consultants, an entire new box suite / club level was created including major renovations to the 20, 000 seat seating bowl. All work was completed prior to the 1996 hockey season, in an amazing 140 day period, on time and on budget.

CANA was also the original constructor of the Olympic Saddledome and in 1984, was awarded the prestigious Canadian Construction Association's Montgomery Memorial Award for Outstanding Innovation in Construction Practice.

CANA also received the American Concrete Institute Award of Excellence for Design and Construction in Concrete.

In 1992, CANA was awarded a second Montgomery Memorial Award for the innovative roof design of the indoor Calgary Soccer Centre. Originally assembled as a flat configuration, the roof was then post tensioned or stressed to form the first large scale stressed arch structure in Canada. Used extensively in Australia, this was the first application in the severe winter conditions of Western Canada.

In 1988, CANA was awarded a second American Concrete Institute Award of Excellence for the construction of the World Heritage Site, Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump Interpretive Centre near Fort MacLeod, Alberta.

CANA has been instrumental in the construction of the University of Calgary including the Jack Simpson Gymnasium which bears the name of CANA's long time President and Owner. The recent construction of the University of Calgary Sport Medicine Centre, a world class testing / medicine facility, was also a CANA project.

Spruce Meadows, Calgary's world-renowned equestrian facility, has construction requirements that only an expert can provide. John Simpson, CANA's President and CEO, is a former Olympic equestrian rider and provides CANA with the expertise to meet all of the stringent Spruce Meadows requirements.

Renovations and additions to existing structures is another CANA specialty. Notable projects involved retail shopping centres and include the Market Mall and Northland Village Shoppes in Calgary, Midtown Plaza in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Victoria Eaton's Centre in Victoria, British Columbia. All of these projects presented a special challenge in that full public and business operations had to be maintained throughout the construction duration.

Approximately 75 percent of CANA's business is with repeat clients, due to their commitment to quality, service, and performance.
