We hand pick our material for all repairs. A full restoration refers to replacing every piece of faulty wood in the inner framework and the outer material on the bottom to above the water line, also any faulty material on the top sides. We make sure all pieces that fasten together have varnish in between in order to extend their life span. I may add that this was not done originally, so your boat, if restored by Butson Boats, will last even longer. When refinishing boats we remove all finish on the sides and decks down to the bare wood. It is then hand scraped and sanded. We do not use machines to do this. When the boat is completely smooth and all defects taken care of, we take special care to season colour the new work. The new material is always lighter in colour than the original boat because mahogany over the years will darken. We then can colour the boat to the customers preference, either dark mahogany or reddish mahogany. We can do this bcause we mix all of our own stains and the filler for the deck seams. We then lay on up to ten coats of varnish by brush. Chrome fittings will be made to look 'like new' if required. The engines sometimes needs attention as well and they are sent out to a specialized company. This is the practice also for the interior upholstery. Sometimes a customer wants a new engine, which we can supply and install with all the new modern electrical installation required today. When we do a complete job like this, the boat will again last for many, many years.

Total restorations ensure that the boat once again looks like it did in its original state and will show 'like new'. We build new mahogany boats of our design, but can build any size boat, from blueprint, that a customer wishes. They, of course, will be build the old fashioned way wooden boats have been built for years. It is pretty hard to replace this construction method.
