St Catharines, ON
Research Capacity:
The analytical chemistry faculty in the Chemistry Department has expertise in the following areas: determination of environmental contaminants; development of methods for the determination of substances of concern in the environment; flow injection analysis methods development; novel introduction techniques for mass spectrometry.
Projects Undertaken: development of particle beam interface for mass spectrometry; development of FAB and flow FAB for pesticides; preconcentration methods for polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons; preconcentration and field screening methods for pesticides in surface and drinking waters; development of automated flow injection methods for the determination of arsenic, antimony, and lead in water; ultra-trace methods for the determination of arsenic, antimony, germanium, tin, lead, selenium, and tellurium in complex matrices; development of low-cost flow injection techniques for the determination of nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, etc. in drinking waters; supported catalysts and reagents, an area of growing importance to industry in the search for environmentally friendly chemical processes; investigations into the use of wetlands for the control of phosphorus; investigations into the use of novel fluorescent molecules for the determination of toxic elements in the environment.
Research Organization: The Brock University Chemistry Department consists of eleven faculty members, eight support staff plus its share of the University Technical Services Electronics and Machine Shop staff of nine. the department provides instruction in chemistry, and together with Biology in biochemistry and biotechnology up to the M. Sc. level. Though in the small to mid-sized category the department is well equipped with modern instrumentation. Research work is carried out by post-doctoral fellows, graduate students and honours undergraduates and by research assistants. The department prides itself on giving its students hands on experience with sophisticated instrumentation.
The Department has received funding from Environment Canada, Ontario, Ministry of Environment and Energy, as well as from numerous industrial sources for projects of environmental importance. Faculty members have been appointed as expert witnesses, members of environmental review committees, and as consultants on laboratory construction.
