BMT Fleet Technology Limited, a member of the BMT group of companies, performs applied research, development and engineering for the transportation, environment, resource/energy, fabrication and manufacturing sectors, including government and the military.
The companys orgins arose from the need to develop advanced engineering solutions for the needs of projects in Canadas harsh operating environments, over thirty years ago. While the companys international reputation is still founded in part on these capabilities, it now offers a much wider range of services to clients across a broad spectrum of industry sectors.
All three of the companys engineering divisions are represented not only by the head office in Ottawa, Ontario, and by the satellite offices in Edmonton, Alberta; and Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia. The bulk of the work in Edmonton is with the pipeline industry, with which the Materials Technology Centre (MTC) has established a particularly solid reputation. Much of MTCs research and development work is in the form of joint industry projects, which involve many of the leading North American energy and transportation companies. MTCs facilities include both materials testing and welding laboratories; which, together with extensive field testing programs are used to ensure that analyses and recommendations are firmly grounded in reality.
The ground-truthing of analysis and design is also a key pillar of work undertaken by the Cold Regions Technology Centre (CRTC) and Marine and Offshore (M&O) division. As an example, CRTC develops turn-key solutions for ice control and management for power stations, navigable waterways, flood control, and other purposes. The same skills are used to undertake risk analyses and to assist in economic evaluations. CRTC collects ice and other environmental data, often using technologies developed or adapted in-house in addition to other state-of-the-art hardware and software.
The Marine and Offshore (M&O) division includes the Hatfield Division in Vancouver. Hatfields large portfolio of tugs, barges, patrol vessels and supply ships includes vessels in service from the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. The M&O division has unique domain expertise in aspects of design and operation including evacuation analysis, ballast water treatment and icebreaker technology, and has recently been undertaking much more work in the areas of risk analysis and general marine environmental protection.
All three divisions are provided with technical support by the Software and Systems group, which provides instrumentation and software development support to projects in many of the areas outlined above. FlawCheck is a new commercial software product for structural integrity assessment, initially developed to meet the needs of the pipeline industry but with applicability to many heavy steel structures. ShipmoPC has established itself as a leading tool for ship motions prediction. The companys instrumentation work ranges from short-term measurements for dedicated ship trials to semi-permanent monitoring installations for civil and marine structures, in locations from Kazakhstan to the Ottawa River.
