The Arctic Trading Company Ltd. was established in 1978 by Keith and Penny Rawlings with two main objectives: to encourage preservation of traditional arts and crafts; and to establish a facility to house artifacts which would appeal to the growing tourist market. The company has a small manufacturing plant on site, staffed by native sewers. They produce fur trimmed mittens, mukluks, and slippers. Accessories are trimmed with native beadwork or caribou hair tufting. The beadwork is individual and bought from the community and other native groups across Canada. The Arctic Trading Company also supports the local fur trade by using pelts collected in the area. Native beadwork, caribou tufting and birchbark bitings are framed, and each piece is authenticated with the artist's name and home community. The company originated an art form called caribou hair sculpture which had its beginnings in western Arctic moose hair tufting.
The Arctic Trading Company collects native treasures from the far reaches of the north, including rare narwhal tusks, musk ox horns, polar bear hides, native jewellery and tools, authentic native clothing, pipes, head-dresses, Eskimo soapstone sculptures and other carved objects. The company markets its unique products through its award winning limited edition catalogue and brochures. The Arctic Trading Company welcomes correspondence from all parts of the world.
