A. G. O. Environmental Electronics Ltd.

A. G. O. Environmental Electronics Ltd.

Victoria, BC

Company Overview

A. G. O. manufactures portable electric and manually operated instrumentation winches with optional slip ring assemblies for oceanographic and mining exploration applications. Other products include subsea electrical connectors and cabling, oceanographic equipment e. g. subsea video systems (including subsea video cameras, lights, and lasers), current meters, niskin water sample bottles, wire payout meters, and slipring assemblies. The company is a manufacturers' representative for 3H Manufacturing Inc. (Texas) and General Oceanics (Florida).

In the geophysics sector, A. G. O. provides mining support equipment for drill hole testing, wire payout systems, and winches. The company's products are also used for environmental applications.

Under a licensing agreement with the Government of Canada, A. G. O. manufactures the Sediment Terminal Impact Newton Gradiometer (S. T. I. N. G.) used for rapid determination of physical characteristics of the sea floor.

  • S. T. I. N. G. - Seabed Terminal Impact Newton Gradiometer

An instrument that is used to determine the bearing strength of the seabed or lake/river bottom.

This unique, free-fall penetrometer will dramatically alter the methods commonly used for determining the dynamic bearing strength of the seabed. STING is a self-contained, tethered probe with a streamlined body and a long (up to two metres), thin steel shaft protruding from the nose cone. The unit is allowed to drop freely through the water, reaching terminal velocity, and impacts into the sea floor vertically with its calibrated shaft foot. Internal microprocessor-based electronics record the deceleration as the shaft embeds itself into the layers of bottom sediment. Since a typical seabed impact event lasts under a second, it is possible to commit multiple impacts to the built-in memory bank. Successive drops can be performed in a single deployment by simply raising the probe several metres off the bottom. After the unit is brought back to the surface, the data is downloaded to a PC workstation. Sophisticated analysis software, included with the probe, determines various kinematic parameters for each impact event and computes an estimate of the seabed bearing strength. Data acquisition can be initiated by hydrostatic pressure or by water immersion. The pressure trigger can be used to start the data logging process at a predetermined water depth, thus economizing memory usage, whereas the water immersion (conductivity) switch starts the acquisition as soon as a pair of electrodes touch the water. The conductivity trip point is menu driven and may be set for different salinity levels, including fresh water. STING was developed by the Canadian Department of National Defense with the technical collaboration of A. G. O., who now manufactures the device under license. JASCO Research brings to the partnership years of experience in the applied physical sciences and an established record as a developer of advanced scientific analysis software ans instrumentation. Applications for STING include: Sub-sea cable and pipeline route selection Sediment deposition determination Harbour Surveys Environmental impact surveys Ground truthing for sub-bottom seabed assessment Deep-sea pre-dredging seabed assessment Selection of appropriate equipment and methods in salvage operations The system consists of: Newton Gradiometer probe measuring deceleration, pressure and conductivity Two one-metre shaft segments with standard 2.54mm contact foot (additional foot sizes available) Battery charger RS232 interconnect cable with sub-sea connector and DB9 plug Software Storage container suitable for shipping An optional hand-operated winch system is available.
