Sharing Our Experience
ABB Inc. is geared to the needs of all our customers. Our experience and sound engineering knowledge are reinforced by the latest technologies and a tightly knit organization dedicated to customer satisfaction.
Over the years we have established a framework with which to pilot you quickly and smoothly through all stages or portions of a project from initial pre-studies to manufacturing and delivery.
Our efficiency comes from employing people who know what makes the industry tick and the highly effective tools we use. All our operations, including manufacturing, production planning as well as administration employ the latest computer technologies. CAD/CAM and CMM are used in the process of design, manufacturing, and for quality assurance. Images of our DOPPIN components, for example are stored on our CAD system and can be superimposed on drawings of your press lines so that we can quickly and efficiently produce a customized proposal for your needs.
The equipment we deliver to our customers in the U. S., Canada and Mexico is constructed in our Mississauga plant mainly using North American component suppliers. This allows us to meet your stringent specification requirements.

Training of your personnel is an important part of our package, especially when it comes to DOPPIN press automation and assembly lines. At our Training Center in Mississauga we run courses for engineers, line operators and maintenance personnel to ensure that you get maximum mileage out of ABB Inc. equipment. The curriculum includes both 'Train the User' and 'Train the Trainer' courses. As the Training Center is located within the manufacturing plant, participants can also study the fabrication and assembly of equipment first-hand.
Advanced Applications and Services are the 'glue' which binds together the increasingly diverse range of systems, products, and supporting technologies encompassing total automation solutions. Our offering includes application-specific software solutions to help customers in each industry meet application-specific needs for product formulation, process optimization, and other criteria. We provide a variety of professional consulting services which help customers augment their downsized staffs through packaged solutions for plant and process optimization, compliance with environmental, safety, and other regulatory requirements, plus ancillary activities such as simulation, training, and maintenance.
Another important objective of our Applications and Services offering is the movement toward total solutions for Strategic Enterprise Management. This concept goes far beyond manufacturing (the process as we know it) to encompass a total business enterprise.
Every manufacturing business, regardless of size, is a complex 'enterprise' of functions such as manufacturing, engineering, finance, human resources, and executive decision support. We are committed to helping customers use information gained in the process environment to better manage the entire business enterprise. Our activities in this area include the design of a detailed architecture for Strategic Enterprise Management, plus a development strategy which is committed to Open Communications between varied systems, Client-Server Computing for shared access to information, and Application-Specific Business Software developed by our company and others.
Distributed Control Systems (DCS) have become the electronic 'brains' of many manufacturing plants, controlling the thousands of interrelated variables which characterize complex industrial processes. We were among the first suppliers of such systems, first putting their microprocessor-based muscle to work for our customers in 1980. We have since adhered to a path of 'forward and backward compatibility' which allows even our very first systems -- rudimentary by current standards -- to encompass today's 'leading edge' improvements. We routinely provide enhancements and upgrades to distributed systems which we sold more than ten years ago. New customers, of course, benefit from immediate access to advanced technology with the assurance of ongoing compatibility.
Our Distributed Systems offering also features a user-configurable architecture which permits the same hardware components to fit the needs of customers in many industries. The largest element of this offering is a system called Bailey INFI 90 OPEN -- so named for its 'open access' features which permit direct integration with computing systems and other automation devices from third parties. INFI 90 OPEN and its compatible predecessors control thousands of complex process applications worldwide.
Through our recent acquisition of Fischer & Porter Company, we added a complimentary DCS platform called DCI SYSTEM SIX which has gained broad acceptance in applications which directly compliment the INFI 90 OPEN platform. DCI SYSTEM SIX, for example, is especially suited for flexible 'batch' applications in the chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and food and beverage industries -- complementing an INFI 90 legacy in the continuous processes of industries such as electric utilities, oil and gas, and pulp and paper manufacturing. DCI SYSTEM SIX permits unusually cost-efficient attention to smaller processes, while INFI 90 OPEN offers virtually-unlimited expandability for plant-wide -- or worldwide applications. We have carefully positioned our Distributed Control Systems platforms to serve the markets which each is best suited, as we leverage the best features of each in our evolution to 'next generation' technologies.

Based on many years experience, ABB Olofstrom Automation Ltd. can actively participate in the design and development of production equipment for new vehicle body parts for you. We can stay with you all the way from initial idea to finished component, furnishing you with complete tooling, automation and control systems for press lines as well as assembly lines. Or you can utilize our services for just one part of this journey.
Process Instrumentation Products are the 'eyes and ears' which help modern distributed systems manage the path to improved costs, productivity, efficiency, safety, and other goals. Some devices provide information to the DCS, constantly measuring process variable such as flow, pressure, temperature, level, pH, and conductivity. Others take orders for action from the DCS such as adjusting a valve or damper. While expanding our range of products in both categories, we have focused on development of 'smart' instrumentation which distributes overall process intelligence increasingly to the field device level.
Dramatic expansion of our capabilities was experienced recently in the Instrumentation Products segment: The Bailey line has been complemented for many years by a range of stand-alone products for the measurement of process variables such as pressure, level, temperature, and combustion analysis. The acquisition of Fischer & Porter has added a premier line of devices for flow measurement and disinfection, plus an organization committed to instrumentation. The subsequent acquisition of Fluid Data Inc. added a respected line of analytical instrumentation including chromatographs, sulfur and octane analyzers, continuous emissions monitors, and other devices to measure chemical composition and physical properties. Our integrated instrumentation line now provides a broader 'one-stop-shop' offering of devices to measure, indicate, and control critical process variables.

Supporting Technologies are an important element of our diverse product lines. While developing our core offering of distributed systems and instrumentation, we recognized the value that certain related technologies -- considered 'niche markets' by some -- could bring to our customers in core markets. Selective implementation of this philosophy -- notably in the Electric Utility and Pulp & Paper markets -- has helped customers exchange their 'islands of automation' for integrated solutions from one source: Elsag Bailey Process Automation.
In the Electric Utility segment, we have assembled a technological offering which spans the range of activities from basic power generation through environmental and optimizing controls. We continue to nurture recent investments which compliment these core solutions by adding application-specific capabilities. These include controls and enhancements which help utilities achieve maximum efficiency from gas and steam turbines, plus energy management systems which help balance production of electric power with transmission and distribution across vast utility grids.
Similar supporting technologies also provide increasing benefits to our customers in industries such as Pulp & Paper, where our partnership with Impact Systems Inc. has helped us evolve our offering from its traditional focus on combustion-related controls to mill-wide automation including quality-related controls for high-speed paper machines. Spanning the range of industries, a strategic business alliance with Valtek International delivers 'smart' control valves as an integrated component of our DCS strategies. Our alliances with other third parties such as Digital Equipment Corporation and Setpoint Inc. enable us to deliver specialized hardware and software solutions ranging from client-server computing to international networking and application-specific control algorithms.
