About Wi-LAN Wi-LAN is a leading developer of innovative wireless products and technologies that enable the high-speed transmission of data, including Internet access, over broadband wide area networks. Along with our antenna subsidiary, TIL-TEK, we provide comprehensive systems that allow rapid and cost- effective deployment of wireless broadband services, and we license and OEM our technologies to interested parties.
Broadband Wireless Solutions Wi-LAN has two primary product categories in its broadband wireless wide area networking portfolio: broadband wireless access systems, and advanced wireless Ethernet bridges. Each product line offers a wide range of choices to meet the specific frequency, transmission speed, cost, and coverage requirements of our customers. These products can be used in point-to- multipoint and point-to-point network architectures, in both licensed and unlicensed radio frequencies. Our products are currently used to build and extend wide area networks (WANs) and to extend local area networks (LANs), enabling service providers to offer new revenue-generating broadband services to their customers, and enabling enterprise customers to build or extend their private networks. Our products have been sold in more than 50 countries on six continents. Our customer base includes telecommunication service providers, original equipment manufacturers, businesses and other vertical market segments, including educational institutions and government.
Technology Licensing Wi-LANs strategy is to license its patented W-OFDM and MC-DSSS technologies to industry participants. Wi-LAN has licensed its patented W-OFDM technology to Philips Semiconductors Inc. for use in designing and developing application specific integrated circuits. We believe this approach will allow us to leverage our core technology to effectively penetrate these high-growth consumer and business markets. Our licensing strategy is designed to promote our technologies to industry players, such as additional semiconductor companies and consumer electronics manufacturers, and to spur the development of broadband wireless access products, including wireless local area networks (LANs), home multimedia (HMM), and wireless road access networks (RANs). This strategy is supplemented by other initiatives including our leadership of the OFDM Forum, whose purpose is the formulation of a single global compatible OFDM standard for wireless communications. The OFDM Forum was launched in March 2000, and its founding members include CalTrans, Ericsson, Nokia, Philips Semiconductors, Samsung Electro-Magnetics, Sony, and Wi-LAN.
Network Living The companys current focus is the first step towards realizing its vision of Network Living, a concept of communicating anywhere, anytime, to anyone. As demand for communications needs increases, the marketplace will respond with the required infrastructure. Wi-LAN believes its technology and networking specialization is at the heart of this new way of living. Over the next five years, Wi-LAN expects the LAN, HMM, and RAN markets to mature as industry standards begin to enable global compatibility.
