Westland has a joint research venture with the Alberta research Council for the development of energy efficient, robust, and environmentally friendly incinerators.
Westland Incinerator Co. Ltd. is a completely Alberta owned and operated company. Its founder, Mr. Rick Abel, as an entrepreneur, has created a market in different Alberta Industries.
Westland Incinerator Co. Ltd. was incorporated in 1985. In 1994, Howell Refractories and Westland Incinerator Co. Ltd. joined hands to meet oncoming market needs. Westland has so far targeted its product and services mainly to the oil, lumber, mining, and Northwest Territories communities. We have sold equipment to the Ministry of Defense and abroad. At present, we are focusing our efforts in upgrading the design and technology to deal with new environmental laws.
Mr. John Scoffield heads the technical division of the company. Mr. Scoffield has worked with and manufactured incinerators since 1962 with Howell Refractories. His large base of knowledge and understanding of incinerator technology has made Westland a leading manufacturer of incinerators in Western Canada.
Mr. Anil Chhibber joined the company to market the incinerators internationally. Westlands' incinerators are in use in Russia, Taiwan, Australia, Bangladesh, Israel, Egypt and Poland. Westand is currently negotiating with the State Government in India for the sale of Bio-Medical Waste and Municipal Waste Incinerators.
Westland Incinerator Co. Ltd. will be seriously pursuing the possibilities of a Technology Transfer to a Joint Venture Partner in Developing countries.

Westlands innovations and advantages In addition to complying with the basic design criteria, Westland, through its extensive R&D efforts, has successfully developed the following main features and the corresponding advantages over the specified acceptable materials:
Flame-port air entry design. The mixing between the flame-port air and the combustible gases generated in the primary chamber is so efficient that less than 2-second of residence time in the secondary chamber is sufficient to produce combustion efficiencies > 99.99%, and DREs > 99.9999% for certain chlorinated organic compounds., Control of oxygen concentration in the secondary chamber. A proprietary control algorithm has been developed which (a) eliminates the generation of black smoke (a common problem with batch-fed incinerators), (b) minimizes the use of auxiliary fuel, (c) maximizes incinerator capacity by prompting the operator when the incinerator is ready for the next batch. Compact, efficient and trouble-free scrubber design. Quenching from 1200 C to ~ 80 C, removal of particulate matter and acid gases (results presented later) and mist/droplet elimination are consistently achieved in one integrated unit, thus eliminating the need for three separate components. Clogging potential is also eliminated, thereby allowing the use of lime as the scrubbing medium. This simplifies operation and lowers operating cost.
