Westbay Instruments Inc.

Westbay Instruments Inc. is a subsidiary of Schlumberger Canada Limited. Founded in 1973, Westbay manufactures proprietary state-of-the-art instrumentation for investigating and monitoring groundwater conditions. Westbay's equipment is used for groundwater contamination studies and for groundwater characterization of nuclear waste management facilities. The equipment is also used for improving management of groundwater resources, as well as on geotechnical investigations on landslides, mines, tunnels and foundations.

By allowing the monitoring of multiple zones in a single borehole, Westbay's approach to groundwater monitoring minimizes the amount of drilling required and reduces the cost of deep groundwater investigations. The ability to collect fluid samples from Westbay monitoring wells without repeated purging results in significant cost savings throughout the operating life of many monitoring projects.

Westbay groundwater monitoring systems provide superior data through unparalleled versatility and field quality assurance capabilities. For over 25 years the products have been used worldwide, including installations in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, New Zealand, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Japan, Korea and China.
Westbay's instrumentation is sold as a system and requires the services of Westbay technicians for assistance during installation and for training of local personnel. Design and development of improved instrumentation capabilities is ongoing.
In North America Westbay markets its products through direct sales from its offices in Burnaby, British Columbia. Distributors and sales representatives have been appointed in Japan, Korea, the United Kingdom and France. Westbay is interested in pursuing and developing sales worldwide. Leading areas of interest are countries in the EEC or on the Pacific Rim.

Westbay's products are most applicable in industrialized areas where groundwater is an important resource or where major mining or construction projects can benefit from improved groundwater characterization and monitoring.

Monitors & Monitoring Systems

Environmental Products And Services
Multi-level groundwater monitoring systems. Westbay manufactures the MP System, a modular multi-level groundwater monitoring system. The ability to test and monitor groundwater at multiple points in a single borehole, combined with Westbay's superior field quality control capabilities, result in a system that provides data of the highest quality within a manageable budget.

Mp System For Groundwater Monitoring.
It permits monitoring of multiple levels in a single borehole. In this manner, detailed three-dimensional groundwater data can be collected with a minimum of drilling. The MP System consists of casing components which allow a borehole to be sealed into many discrete monitoring zones. The MP casing is sealed along its entire length, preventing groundwater from flowing in or out of the casing. Casing packers seal the borehole between monitoring zones, preventing unnatural vertical flow of groundwater between monitoring zones. Valved port couplings along the casing provide access to the groundwater outside the casing. Electronic and mechanical probes and tools are lowered within the casing to carry out measurements of fluid pressure and temperature, collect fluid samples, and test hydraulic parameters. System packages can include remote real-time automated monitoring of groundwater pressure and temperature. Fluid samples are collected from Westbay monitoring wells without repeated purging, a factor that can yield significant cost reductions on sites where contaminated purge water must be stored, transported and treated before disposal. Westbay's equipment is used for groundwater contamination studies on hazardous waste sites and for groundwater characterization related to nuclear waste management. The equipment is also used for improving management of groundwater resources, as well as on geotechnical investigations such as landslides, open pit mines, tunnels and foundations. Westbay's MP System has also been used for monitoring groundwater pressure on a number of major geotechnical projects worldwide, including slope stability studies for the Panama Canal, the Clyde Power Project in New Zealand, a mine in Papua New Guinea, nuclear power plants in Japan, and large reservoir slopes in British Columbia. Other geotechnical projects include major bridge foundations in British Columbia and Japan, hydro power tunnel alignments in Ontario, and hydrogeologic site characterization for underground research laboratories in Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Japan.
