Waterloo Biofilter Systems Inc.

The Waterloo Biofilter is an alternative septic system designed to efficiently treat sewage wastewaters and landfill leachate. This free-draining, absorbent trickling filter ideal for residential or cottage lots, communal designs and commercial sites. Our systems are installed across Canada, the United States and Korea, treating wastewater on-site from individual houses, trailer parks, golf courses, restaurants, and small municipalities. Fully scalable and developed for hot or cold climates, the Waterloo has small space and low maintenance and energy requirements. These versatile systems are very robust and include options such as re-use for irrigation, above or below ground configurations, sub-surface or surface disposal, and remote monitoring.

The Waterloo is an aerobic biofilter designed for the biological treatment of wastewater. The patented system utilizes an absorbent synthetic filter medium that optimizes physical properties for microbial attachment and water retention, creating an ideal environment for beneficial microbes that degrade and oxidize organic pollutants, coliform bacteria, ammonium, and other contaminants in septic tank effluent.

Third-party testing over 10 years has shown consistent removal rates of 90-95% BOD, 90-97% TSS, 99% fecal coliform and up to 60% TN. The treated water is near-swimming water quality, so that sub-surface disposal will require an area 5 ' 10 times smaller than that of conventional sand or soil beds. This is especially useful for larger systems where space may be at a premium, and for residential sites with small lots, heavy clay soils, shallow or exposed bedrock, and high water table.

Our specialty is on-site sewage treatment for golf courses and resorts. The compact Waterloo system is engineered to make wastewater disposal as discreet as possible. High strength wastewaters, seasonal operation and weekend surge flows are easily accommodated. The lack of generation of aerobic sludge is a distinct advantage over other aerobic systems. Our modular system can be customized to meet the needs of your site and your budget, and remotely monitored for ease of operation. Golf course wastewater can be disposed of economically below ground or can be treated for immediate re-use as irrigation water.

Re-use of treated sewage in the household is being done in Canadian Arctic communities where water supply is expensive and in communities where treatment plants are at capacity. The Waterloo Biofilter effluent is further disinfected with sand filters and ozone so that the water is effectively potable (except for nitrate) and is re-used immediately for toilets, and sometimes laundry, baths, and showers.

Landfill leachate can be effectively treated by the Waterloo Biofilter and disposed of on-site. Experience shows that 98% of hydrocarbons and VOCs, and 50-95% of heavy metals are removed in the Biofilter, thereby reducing contamination of soil and groundwater.
