Company Description
The Walpole Island First Nation established the Heritage Centre in 1989. Its mission is to preserve, interpret and promote the natural and cultural heritage of the Walpole Island First Nation.
Nin.Da.Waab.Jig (meaning...those who seek to find) records the past to better understand the present. It is mandated by the Chief and Council to develop, administer and implement community-based heritage programs.
Ancestors of Ojibway, Pottawatomi and Ottawa natives have lived seasonally on Walpole Island for nearly 8,000 years. The Nation has shown how traditional hunting, fishing, and farming activities can be carried out in a way that promotes both ecological harmony and community sustainability. For the Walpole Heritage Centre, sustainable development is merely a new term for an old philosophy.
Environmental activities include fish and wildlife management projects, monitoring air quality and pesticides and a comprehensive wetlands study to quantify the current load of organic and metallic contaminants contained in the Walpole Island Delta.
The Walpole Island Heritage Centre has demonstrated leadership in implementing strategies to promote sustainable development. Faced with environmental threats, it has cultivated initiatives to sustain communities without sacrificing traditional lifestyles. Their dedication to blending scientific data with Aboriginal knowledge is demonstrated in their study of the effects on Aboriginal peoples from the environment of the Great Lakes (known as the EAGLE project).
Similar challenges are encountered by individuals within the Walpole Island First Nations as well as other international and Canadian indigenous peoples. The Walpole Heritage Centre counts as their clients all those individuals and groups interested in environmental heritage, promotion and management.
