Company Overview

VoiceAge is the forerunner in the development and dissemination of speech and audio compression technologies and solutions at the convergence of wireless (2.5G, 3G, Wi-Fi) and wireline networks. Using designs based on our flagship ACELP technology platform, VoiceAge codec solutions deliver unsurpassed quality experienced daily by more than two billion users worldwide. The ACELP technology platform underlies different low bit rate speech and audio codecs within wireless and wireline communication, consumer electronic, and Internet applications.

The ACELP technology platform has led to hundreds of granted patents and patent applications, which are included in fifteen international telecommunication standards, notably: GSM EFR (ETSI), PCS 1900, IS136 (TIA, North American TDMA), IS 95 (TIA, North American CDMA), TETRA (ETSI), G.729 (ITU-T), G.723.1 (ITU-T), AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) narrowband (ETSI and 3GPP), AMR-WB (3GPP), G.722.2 (ITU-T), MPEG-4 CELP Audio (ISO), PDC-EFR (ARIB-Japan), VMR-WB (3GPP2), and most recently, AMR-WB+ (3GPP).

VoiceAge also represents and manages, as a license service provider, various Patent Pools with the relevant patent owners. These Patent Pools were created to accelerate market adoption of specific telecommunication standards by providing users a simplified way to access the technology. The Patent Pools provide users with convenient, fair, reasonable and nondiscriminatory access to a portfolio of essential worldwide patents under a single license agreement.

The Universit de Sherbrooke, in partnership with Sipro Lab Telecom Inc., founded VoiceAge Corporation (Montreal, Canada) in 1999.

Technology Profile:

Speech and audio compression solutions for mobile, wireless, Internet and consumer applications

Unique Applications:

CodecLib CodecLib is an integration tool for speech and audio codecs. The CodecLib API (library API) is a common application programming interface developed as an integration tool for deploying multiple combinations of speech and audio codecs. Its OS-independence and open interface enable easy integration on any floating-point platform running under the Windows, Mac, Linux or Solaris operating system. Features include:

Buffer management Library query Optional enhancements such as

  • DTX (Discontinuous Transmission) mode, in combination with
  • VAD (Voice Activity Detection) on the encoder and
  • CNG (Comfort Noise Generation) on the decoder
  • BFI (Bad Frame Indicator) mode

Additional enhancement features are available depending on the application and environment.

ACM Driver Designed for Windows Audio Compression Manager (ACM) applications, our ACM drivers were developed and tested within the Windows 2000/NT/98 and XP environments and are delivered as an installation file for the driver update. Theyre truly plug and play: if your application uses the ACM framework in Windows, then all you need to do is install our codec and then select the corresponding codec function via the ACM. VAD, DTX and CNG features and SID frames are included with G.722.2/AMR-WB and AMR and are available for our G.729 implementation. Only VoiceAge offers a G.729b ACM driver customized to work directly with the Microsoft RTC (Real-Time Communications) layer. RTC provides an interface to the RTP (Real-Time Transport Protocol) layer, which supports transmission of voice over IP (VoIP) and instant messaging.

Variable Playback Variable Playback enables you to play back digital speech at any speed from 1/3 to 3 times the original recorded rate without any change in pitch or speech quality. This dynamic time-scale modification ability makes any listening experience more efficient, whether for fast playback for skimming through media or for slow playback for detailed note-taking or making sense of a foreign language. Variable Playback is so flexible its playback rate can be changed from frame to frame. It works as a standalone module or can be combined with any codec. Variable Playback is a great addition to both end-user applications such as audio content playback, voicemail, and toys and games, where it can help listeners speed up or slow down speech files, and to network robustness applications, where it can be connected with the jitter buffer to help accommodate an underflow or overflow of packets, thereby increasing both system robustness and communication quality.
