HUGHES SPACE AND COMMUNICATIONS A facilities planning study used simulation to design and cost a high-volume satellite production facility. The simulation included the assembly methodology, plant layout, staffing and equipment requirements. The study provided the production plan needed to allow Hughes to reduce production cycle-times from one month to one day.
FORD MOTOR COMPANY Our consultants have assisted various Ford Assembly plants in the use and application of simulation for plant layout, materials handling systems, robotic assembly design, and manpower planning. These projects have typically included workshop-training programs to help transfer this technology to line management for their ongoing use on other simulation applications. Typical capital cost savings of 10% of the project cost are reported through the use of simulation.
CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAYS Developed a Maintenance-of-the-Way Simulator that is designed to structure Rail & Tie Crews that are used to repair the track. The system simulates the various functions within the Work Crews with their compliment of machines and operators. Given a section of track the tool is used to estimate the duration of the work for a specified gang and block time. The tool has saved the Railroad over $4 million in labor and equipment savings.
FALCONBRIDGE LIMITED A simulation was developed for one of the worlds largest mining operations located in Northern Ontario, Canada to analyze material flows and underground storage requirements. The model is currently being used to investigate future mine expansion requirements. The model, which provides an animated view of the workings of the mine, is helping management to better co-ordinate hoisting of miners and equipment with the extraction of ore. Recently, management saved the company $10 million through cost-avoidance based on the simulation results.
