Vancouver Island Health Authority
The Capital Health Authority provides a comprehensive range
of health care services to a population of 325,000 in the capital
region of B.C. The CHR maintains an operating budget of $470
million and and employee base of 9,500. The CHR has initiated
an innovative 2-year self care health education pilot project to
12,000 households representing approximately 26,000 - 30,000
participants. The project includes a comprehensive self care
handbook covering 180 common health concerns, a
teleophone support line staffed by specially trained registered
nurses and a regular project participant newsletter. An
extensive
evaluation plan also comprises this project. The program will
test the efficacy of health education when applied as a direct
intervention and monitor impacts of appropriate decision making
and utilization of physician services.
