University of Calgary, Faculty of Environmental Design
The Faculty of Environmental Design offers programmes in four areas: Architecture, Planning, Industrial Design, and Environmental Sciences. In the two decades since the founding of the Faculty, the nature and scope of its activities have developed widely and deeply, in concert with the growing concerns about the environment and its qualities, and with the extended complexity of the environmental issues. Attention in design is increasingly given to the appropriate ends, the just and equitable modes of intervention, and the qualitative character of environment to be achieved when management, planning and design projects are undertaken. In these respects, the Faculty's research, educational programs and outreach service variously touch on natural, social, cultural and built environments. Its ultimate concerns are for the quality of human life and sustainability.

Expertise In Design For Sustainable Development, Lifecycle Assessment And Related Ethical Considerations.
Stuart Walker offers expertise in product design and product manufacture as these relate to the principles of sustainable development. Research is conducted in these areas through theoretical investigations coupled with experimental product design that focuses on the transmutation of theory into practical design solutions. Topics covered include: the ethical and social implications of sustainability including the nature of employment in manufacturing; environmental best practice and its relationship to local scale and global scale production, recycling and product reprocessing; aesthetics, meaning and material culture; and qualitative product assessment for sustainability.
The Industrial Design programme exists within the graduate Faculty of Environmental Design. The Faculty offers Masters and PhD studies in architecture, planning, environmental design and environmental science in addition to industrial design. Research in Sustainable Product Design, within the Industrial Design Programme is enhanced by complementary research in Planning, Environmental Science and Architecture. For example, in Planning research into sustainable communities informs the structure and organisation of sustainable product manufacturing, and in Environmental Science, work in product and technology assessment contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the environmental consequences of product design.
Offerings are made to the intellectual debate in this area through presentations at major industrial design conferences, exhibitions, and publications in scholarly journals and professional publications.
Research Into Computer Visualization, Cad, Gis As Tools In Urban Development.
Dr. Levy has expert knowledge of the history and development of Calgary. As an Associate Professor of Planning and Urban Design at the University of Calgary, Dr. Levy has been involved in design research on the use of 3D computer modeling, GIS and computer visualization as a decision making tool in the evaluation of urban development projects. Current research focuses on issues that surround the use of computer technology in the planning review process including: historic and legal precedent, human perception, and public acceptance of computer modeling technology. A goal of Prof. Levy's research has been to expand the repertoire of computer techniques used by planners, architects and real estate developers in decision making. Currently, Dr. Levy also serves as the Director of Legacy 2005, a University of Calgary laboratory dedicated to the development of VR and multimedia technology. He has a BSCE from Tufts University, an M.Arch and Ph.D in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley.
Projects undertaken include:
Computer modeling and visualization of proposed condominium development in the City of Calgary Computer modeling of mining development in NWT Computer Visualization of a proposed residential development VR models for testing the design of light rail stations
Expertise In Environmental Management.
Dr. Dixon Thompson's area of expertise is in the field of Environmental Management. Specific topics include: design and implementation of Environmental Management Systems (including ISO 4001) for corporations and for municipal governments; improvements to and applications of a set of environmental management tools, strategic environmental planning and management, environmental auditing, environmental impact assessment, environmental management structures, product and technology assessment, life cycle assessment, environmental indicators and reporting, purchasing guidelines, identification of analysis of driving forces and barriers. The research and development have also been applied to trade and environment issues, especially with respect to the NAFTA, FTAA and WTO.
