Environmental Products And Services

Development, Treatment And Delivery Of Water For Potable, Industrial And Agricultural Purposes.
Effective water management has always been important. As populations grow, and the demand for clean water increases, even more emphasis is being placed on the proper management of water. Effective planning for the protection of water sources; water conservation; judicious assignment of priority to competing water uses; treatments to provide quality levels appropriate to use; and, distribution of this essential commodity from its source to the point of need, are all services which UMA can provide efficiently and effectively. In particular, our skills and experience relate to municipal potable water supplies, industrial water supply and irrigation water. We undertake water basin management planning, the design of surface water empoundments, the design of water treatment for ground and surface waters, and, the design of pumping stations, pipelines and distribution systems.

Identify And Implement Better Solid Waste Management Practices.
The handling of solid wastes from municipalities and industry is an increasingly difficult problem in relation to concerns about air and water pollution, and soil and groundwater contamination. Traditional methods of disposal have had to be refined to reduce their polluting nature; to minimize the generation of solid waste; to locate disposal sites in publicly acceptable locations; and, to seek environmentally benign disposal technologies. UMA has provided services to municipalities, and to industry (particularly the mining, refining and pulp and paper industries) in the areas of: estimating quantities of waste; waste collection; landfill; composting; incineration; leachate and gas collection; treatment and disposal; regional solid waste management plans; environmental monitoring; and, prediction of environmental effects in the neighbourhood of solid waste disposal sites. A particular expertise exists in developing closure plans for mining sites and tailings areas.

Identify Effects And Design And Implement Mitigating Measures.
Urban and rural development has the potential to harm the environment through: air and water pollution; soil and groundwater contamination; flooding and erosion; noise; physical barriers and displacements. There is a need to protect the ecosystem from these effects for the benefit of man, the economy and life forms that depend on a healthy environment. UMA offers a spectrum of consulting services to predict the likely environmental impacts of development activities; to determine if there are ways to prevent the impacts; and, in the event where they cannot be prevented, to design and implement environmental protection measures. Scientists, engineers in many disciplines, environmental planners and project managers, make up the core of our staff complement who provide such services. The services are offered within North America and at many overseas locations.

Install Economic And Efficient Industrial Systems To Protect The Environment.
Although pollution control by end-of-pipe treatment remains an essential component of environmental protection, industry has recognized the inherent economy and efficiency of preventing the creation of pollutants through improved product formulation, reduction, recycle and reuse of raw and processed materials and energy. UMA has contributed to industry's environmental protection efforts through the development and installation of Environmental Management Systems incorporating: strategies and actions for pollution prevention; waste collection and treatment for pulp and paper, petroleum refining, food processing, mining and milling of ores, ethanol manufacture, petrochemical manufacturing and agricultural activities; erection of air pollution control facilities with particular reference to the pulp and paper industry.

Environmental Audits, Site Assessments And Inspections.
Site assessments and inspections can provide essential background information to real estate transactions and to managers concerned about the compliance of plant operations with accepted environmental and workplace health and safety standards. UMA provides: Real estate assessments; Site history investigation; Property environmental liability; Groundwater contamination surveys; Soil contamination surveys; Hazardous waste inventory and identification; Plant or process auditing for compliance with environmental and workplace safety and health requirements; Problem identification and remediation planning; Regulatory agency liaison; Facility closure and decommissioning audits; Environmental audits for process industries and institutions; Energy audits for municipal infrastructure operations.
