HISTORY AND BACKGROUND OF THE COMPANY
Terra Engineering Ltd. is a member of the Terra group of
companies. The Terra group consists of the 5 specialized
companies noted here, which are, with the exception of Terra
Geotechnics Sdn. Bhd., all 100% Canadian, privately held
engineering consulting firms.
Under the original name of Terra Engineering Laboratories Ltd.,
Terra began operations in British Columbia in 1957. The company
now has 9 offices strategically located throughout Brtish
Columbia, with a joint venture geotechnical and materials
engineering company located in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia.
Total permanent staff in BC is 75, with an additional 30 persons
in the Malaysia office.
The Terra group has been involved in over 18,000 projects since
they began operations in 1957, including numerous international
assignments. Internationally, the company has served clients, and
worked on projects in the following countries or regions:
Mexico, the Carribean region, Columbia, Australia, Malaysia,
Thailand, South Korea, Turkey, Belgium, Northern Africa, as well
as throughout Canada, portions of the Northwest Territories, and
many areas within the USA.
The principal fields of activity for the Terra group consists of:
geotechnical and foundation engineering, including slope
stability and watershed protection and extensive forestry
geotechnical engineering; environmental consulting; materials and
pavement engineering, as well as quality assurance and quality
control testing (CSA certified) service requirements.
Past experiences include servicing clients, with scope ranging
from very small assignments through to mega-developments, on the

Containment Designs And Monitoring For Landfill And Mine Wastes.
We provide advanced containment designs for wastes from landfill and mining operations. The designs incorporate sophisticated monitoring mechanisms for leachate detection and gas-generation. Complete chemical characterization of the waste/leachate is determined to evaluate necessary corrective measures. If necessary, environmental impact/risk assessment is also carried out.
Landfill Design And Geoenvironmental Engineering.
The Terra Group of Companies provides consulting services in geoenvironmental engineering, focusing on the application of geotechnical engineering to environmental issues. The staff have the range of background, experience and teamwork relationship which provides the necessary bridge between geotechnical engineering and environmental science. Thus, through a well-analyzed multi-disciplinary approach, optimum engineering solutions are provided to address our clients' problems as encountered in the environment. The approach to geoenvironmental engineering project assignment challenges, generally includes (1) identification of the environmental issue/problem, (2) investigation of the extent and severity of the identified problem, (3) review and analysis of the problem, (4) determination of an appropriate and cost-effective engineering solution, (5) monitoring implementation of the engineering solution, and (6) monitoring long-term effectiveness of the recommended engineering solution. Existing landfill space is fast being depleted and new facilities are increasingly difficult to permit. As a result, there is a need for practical and innovative strategies to help address future waste storage requirements while avoiding adverse environmental impact. Today's demands require engineered landfill designs to ensure effective leachate control and material stability. Existing landfill facilities due for closure usually require pre-planned, methodical decommissioning procedures to contain and make-safe facility contents and where appropriate reclaim the land for other suitable uses. Terra's staff have the environmental, geotechnical and materials knowledge and experience to provide turn-key consulting services for landfill projects, including Landfill Design, Leachate Control, Containment Design, Decommissioning, Slope Stability, and Capping Design and Closure.
Health And Safety Audits.
Terra Environmental Consultants Ltd. will conduct comprehensive audits of commercial/industrial facilities to determine the permitting and regulatory compliance. Numerous area of concerns will be addressed, including environmental management systems; air emissions; liquid effluents; waste management; storage of chemicals, oil and solvents; PCBs; asbestos; noise; emergency plans; housekeeping; groundwater and land contamination; and health and safety issues. Appropriate reviews of regulatory and permitting requirements will be carried out.
Industrial Process Review And Waste Management.
A majority of industrial processes involve handling of a variety of chemicals and other potentially hazardous material. In addition, the waste streams such as solid residues and liquid effluents, are often environmentally toxic or hazardous and require safe handling for disposal and, where possible, detoxification. The industrial plant air quality is also often a concern. As a result, regulatory bodies enforce strict guidelines for compliance to ensure personnel safety and environmental protection.
