Company Description
Since 1976 Trojan Technologies Inc. has specialized in ultraviolet disinfection, specifically in the areas of research, product development, systems design, marketing, manufacturing, and service. Trojan Technologies Inc. provides technological solutions to the common problems of microbial and chemical pollution in water. Trojan conducts research into commercial applications for UV technology, designs products which use this technology, and manufactures and distributes UV water and wastewater disinfection equipment and systems for municipal, industrial, and residential use. Trojan now employs over 130 people at its headquarters in London, Ontario. Marketing is done through a network of agents and manufacturers representatives throughout the world. Trojan's European headquarters are located in The Hague, Holland.
Factory seminars for consulting engineers, regulatory agencies, and Trojan's representatives are being held on an ongoing basis. Visits to operational UV systems are continually being arranged, so that potential customers can verify the suitability of Trojan's technology to their applications.
The firm's emphasis in marketing has been placed on the development of a professional network of manufacturers' representatives. Trojan's network of over 90 representatives in the USA, Canada, and overseas is of the highest quality. This network of local professionals enables the firm to respond quickly and efficiently to its customers' needs. Trojan Technologies Inc. looks for sales representative companies which have strong engineering capabilities, proven expertise in wastewater treatment applications, compatible technologies for wastewater treatment, and strong commitment (with necessary resources) to engage in an aggressive and comprehensive marketing effort. With approximately 70% market share in the global wastewater UV disinfection market, Trojan is strategically positioned to offer strong support to interested parties.

These ultraviolet disinfection systems destroy pathogenic microbes by delivering concentrated amounts of UV light energy (at the germicidal wavelength at 254 nm) to the reproductive mechanism of the microbe. This prevents the microbe from reproducing. The risk of disease is thereby eliminated. UV is a natural process that disinfects without chemicals and no by-products are created.
TrojanUVMax' effectively purifies drinking water, protecting against viruses, bacteria, and intestinal protozoa such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia.
With the arrival of Trojan UVLogic, drinking water treatment facilities, food and beverage companies, semiconductor manufacturers, pharmaceutical firms, and other industrial organizations can all now benefit from the water quality improvements that Trojan's advanced UV technology offers.
This ultraviolet disinfection system depends directly on the exposure of a liquid-borne micro-organism to the germicidal wavelength of ultraviolet light (253.7 nm). It eliminates all types of micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses, moulds, protozoa, and yeasts. The central component of the Trojan System UV 3000 is the UV Module. UV Modules may contain anywhere from 4-8 lamps, and banks of UV Modules may be installed singly or in series. The modularity of the system permits immense flexibility in designing a system to meet the requirements of a wide variety of channel widths, depths, flow rates, coliform counts, UV light transmissions, and suspended solids. Suspended matter such as algae, plastics etc., which typically are present in wastewater treatment plants, can be removed by hosing down the UV Modules with water while in operation.
The UV detection system consists of a totally submersible probe containing two detectors, which in combination give a precise readout of the ultraviolet dose delivered in the Trojan System UV 3000. The system is calibrated to a precise sensitivity of at least 90% of the germicidal portion of the UV spectrum. The system also employs an automatic level control gate, or weirs, to ensure optimal system performance (whether at minimal or maximal flow capacity), by keeping the effluent in the disinfection channel constant at all times.
The Trojan System UV 3000 uses the gravity flow of the plant to bring effluent to the UV unit, so there are no pumps, pipes, valves or fittings required. Thus the cost of the UV equipment can be as little as 50% of the total cost of the system. This also makes it a relatively simple system for retrofitting existing plants; the UV Modules can usually be fitted into existing effluent channels, or contact chambers. Requiring only seconds of contact time, UV does not require any holding tanks to achieve adequate disinfection.
There is no requirement to be able to isolate the system for service, as the UV Modules can be shut down individually and lifted out of the open flow channel for service without interrupting the flow or performance of the other UV Modules. The results are lower capital costs, easier maintenance, and minimal requirements for standby or back-up equipment.
Ultraviolet (UV) has gained acceptance as an alternative to chlorination for disinfection of secondary, tertiary and reuse wastewater effluents. However, large wastewater treatment plants requiring many lamps, and plants with low quality effluents which either rapidly coat the lamps or reduce the transmittance of UV through the effluent have found the number of low intensity lamps and the operating expense of keeping them clean to be a barrier to using current UV lamp disinfection technology.
The Trojan System UV 4000 technology addresses the above concerns by using high intensity lamps to reduce the number of lamps required to deliver UV doses, and by incorporating an automatic cleaning mechanism.
The Trojan System UV 4000 extends the range of UV disinfection to poorer quality effluents (e. g. primary effluents for ocean discharge, treated CSO and other storm water discharges) and to high volume wastewater treatment plants for which the number of low intensity UV lamps and/or the operating costs to clean the lamps are too high. UV treatment has an important advantage over chlorination, in that lower quality wastewaters, typically richer in organics, consume larger quantities of chemical disinfectants and produce corresponding by elevated amounts of chlorinated byproducts. UV is more selective than the chemical disinfectants in the chemical functional groups with which it interacts. The UV doses used for disinfection are relatively low and have been shown by bioassays with different organisms not to produce any increased toxicity in the UV disinfected effluents.
UV is simple to control for pathogen reduction during a storm in which there can be rapid changes in flow rate and water quality: UV overdosing to guarantee disinfection has no negative impacts on effluent quality, whereas chlorine dosing must constantly be balancing the issues of chlorine demand, pH, temperature, toxicity of residuals, and byproduct formation while attempting to achieve disinfection. The instantaneous effect of UV avoids the need for construction of large settling basins and contact tanks.
