Tippet-Richardson
Tippet-Richardson Limited was founded in 1927, with its
primary goal to provide high quality residential and
commercial moving services in the Toronto area. The two
founding partners were Basil Tippet and C.A. Richardson.
Using a rented warehouse and one van, the new company
commenced operation on the highways as an independent
operator moving furniture. At that time the bulk of their
business was to and from the U.S., Ontario and Quebec.
Back then there was no Canadian highway into Western
Canada, and in order to make its western deliveries, the
company was required to travel through the U.S.
In 1934, the two partners separated, and Basil Tippet bought
his partner out. He was the major shareholder until 1944,
when the Naylor brothers, Russell and Walter, bought in and
became vice-presidents. Russell Naylor had been with the
company since it first began, in the role of Operations
Manager.
These were exciting times. In 1947 the first experimental
trips were being made into Western Canada using the new
Canadian highway. In the 1950's, the company expanded
into Hamilton, Ottawa, Stratford and Waterloo, Ontario.
Mr. Tippet died in 1959, leaving the Naylor's to continue
operating and expanding Tippet-Richardson.
Russell Naylor's sons, Peter and Bruce, entered into the
business in the late `50's and early `60's respectively. The
`60's saw more expansion, bringing locations in Trenton,
Pembroke and North Bay, Ontario. The company also
diversified into the travel business by purchasing Farewell
Travel.
The `70's brought new acquisitions; London, Ontario and
King Moving & Storage, bringing locations in Edmonton,
Calgary and Fort McMurray, Alberta. Russell Naylor died in
1976, leaving his sons to continue the legacy.
The `80's saw increased growth and development.
Expansion into Business Records Special Products, and
Overseas Moving, helped propel the company forward. An
office was opened in San Jose, California and thus TR Inc.,
was formed. Pacific Moving & Storage was purchased
bringing in a Vancouver, B.C. location. Other acquisitions
included Halifax, Nova Scotia, Saint John and Oromocto in
New Brunswick. A new branch was opened in Montreal,
Quebec.
By 1989, there were new offices and warehouses in 17
separate locations encompassing the provinces of British
Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New
Brunswick and the state of California. The company
operated a hauling fleet of 320 vehicles and employed 600
full-time people. This was a long way from its humble
beginnings, over 60 years ago.
The business interests of the two brothers, Peter and Bruce,
were then split. Peter assumed ownership of Warehouse
Properties, which held title to the warehouses and office
buildings and Bruce assumed ownership of Tippet-Naylor
Limited, which owned 85% of Tippet-Richardson.
The first four years of the 1990's saw Tippet-Richardson
down size in response to declining market conditions. A
number of offices were sold, closed or amalgamated with
others.
In 1994, a further realignment was accomplished with
Warehouse Properties purchasing the overseas moving
division of Toronto, forming TR Overseas Moving Inc., as
well as the Calgary and Vancouver branches, forming TR
Westcan Inc. In 1996, Tippet-Richardson was repurchased
by Peter Naylor, with offices in Windsor, London, Kitchener,
Toronto, Ottawa, Halifax and Oromocto.
Here we are embarking on a new legacy of growth and
success, which includes 70 years of service.
