Thermo Design Engineering Ltd.
Thermo Design Engineering Ltd. (TDE), of Edmonton, Alberta, is one of Canada's leading specialists in Petroleum and Petrochemical Process Systems. It has also established itself as one of Canada's leading companies in natural gas and oil clean up and treatment. It is a 100% Alberta-owned Company and has been in operation since 1979 and employs 300 people. Since its formation, it has provided engineering design and fabrication services to these industries both in Canada and abroad.
TDE has experienced rapid growth in recent years. It has entered the international marketplace and diversified its products. Its projects have been shipped to Alaska, Angola, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan, Syria, China, Poland, Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. It has also conducted engineering design and studies for Cameroon, Egypt and Iran. This increased export work led to winning a 1989 Alberta Export Development Award.
As an engineering and fabrication contractor, TDE can offer any combination of the following services:
Commissioning and startup Engineering consulting Equipment fabrication Personnel training Procurement Project management Site construction Supervision
TDE was a pioneer in the modular design concept of natural gas processing plants and is currently exporting its expertise to many countries all over the world. The modular concept is ideally suited for remote installations. All of the major equipment is configured and assembled to prefabricated structural steel skids.
These skids, in turn, are sized in accordance with local transportation needs and requirements. The skidded components or modules are then shipped to the field where installation and commissioning can take place in the matter of days.
In 1987, TDE, in its drive for diversification, joined a consortium lead by the U.S. Electric Power Research Institute/Alberta Research Council in a multi-year R&D program with a mission to develop cleaner energy and environmental technologies. An end result of the program was the development of the Clean Soil Process (CSP), a remediation technology which is capable of treating a wide variety of wastes and contaminants.
In 1993 TDE formed a subsidiary company, TDEnviro Inc. (TDV), to take the CSP to commercialization and to develop new waste treatment technologies. TDV has since built plants for cleaning contaminated soil from industrial sites and oilfield waste (produced sand) from heavy oil production. TDV is in the business of providing customized waste treating technology, equipment and services to all sectors of industry.

Clean Soil Process (csp)
Contaminated soils from oil production and refining sites and other heavy industry sites where soils are extremely heterogeneous and contaminated with high viscosity organics are well suited to treatment using the Clean Soil Process (CSP). The Clean Soil Process (CSP) is uniquely suited to cleaning up soils contaminated with carcinogenic polycyclic hydrocarbons and volatile hydrocarbons (primarily BTEXs), heavy organics, petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals.
Manufacturered Gas Plant (MGP) sites are some of the worst contaminated sites in the world and contain many of these contaminants. Most of these MGP sites were closed by the 1950's but now occupy potentially expensive and valuable real estate. However the sites are largely unusable and declared 'hazardous sites' in some jurisdictions.
The CSP process has low operating costs at $30-90/tonne for a 200 tonnes/day mobile plant make the technology highly competitive with other alternatives. The CSP is unique in its use of coal as a contaminant adsorbent. There are two basic versions of the technology: In its basic form, the Simplified CSP (or SCSP), the process involves mixing contaminated soil with powdered coal which has been wetted with a light oil and adsorbs high viscosity hydrocarbon contaminants. The coal adsorbent is then agglomerated, collected, and later burned in approved coal-fired power plants or cement kilns.
During the process the feed and by-products are changed from a hazardous to nonhazardous materials. The other version of the technology, the Integrated CSP (or ICSP) combines the basic clean soil process with thermal desorption for post treatment. The ICSP is capable of cleaning the product soil to below 3 ppm PAH's and produces high calorific value fuel that can also be utilized in coal fired power plants or cement kilns.
