Company Overview

Thermal-Lube Inc., founded in Montreal, Qu., in October 1983, is a privately owned Canadian company in the business of researching, developing, manufacturing and marketing specialty lubricants, performance additives, and analytical lubricant monitoring equipment. The company's policy of reacting to the needs of its customers and keeping up to date with the latest environmental demands of Canada has enabled Thermal-Lube to manufacture and sell a complete product line of high quality, environmentally friendly, synthetic oils, greases and additives to industrial and retail markets world-wide.

Thermal-Lube has always made a serious commitment to the research and development of new lubricants and views R&D as an integral part of its future. Governmental recognition of this commitment has resulted in the company receiving numerous R&D assistance grants from both the Federal and Provincial governments in support of the many research projects completed over the past ten years. Thermal-Lube's continuing practice of investing substantial resources towards research and development while simultaneously expanding into new markets has been the key to the company's past successes and will be a major factor in insuring future growth.

Thermal-Lube has been working in partnership with McGill University to develop the COAT System, a Continuous Oil Analysis and Treatment system. The COAT System is designed to optimize the efficiency of a lubricating oil by continuously monitoring the condition of the oil and automatically replenishing performance enhancing additives to the oil hence extending the service life. The COAT System is made to suit customers' need. Thermal-Lube received an honorable mention from the University-Industry Synergy R&D Partnerships for the work done in collaboration with McGill University.

Thermal-Lube is becoming well known in Asia, as it has four joint venture companies in China manufacturing and distributing its specialty lubricant products. A COAT System was also recently sold to Korea's largest refinery. Now Thermal-Lube focuses on the Japanese market where great interest in Thermal-Lube's products is being shown. Geographic Marketing Activity:

Asia, China, Korea, Japan, Europe, Spain, North America.

Research grants were awarded by the CNRC (Canadian National Research Council) for the development of our COAT System (see web site). We have also received grants from Environment Canada, and NSERC (Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council) for further development of the same product.

In 1997 we received 'Honourable Mention' award for Best Practices in University-Industry R&D Partnerships. This was sponsored by the Conference Board of Canada & NSERC. We were awarded a patent for the COAT System in 1998.

Products

  • Continuous Oil Analysis And Treatment (coat) System

The Continuous Oil Analysis and Treatment (COAT) System was developed by Thermal-Lube Inc. in collaboration with the McGill IR Group (McGill University) and Dwight Analytical Solutions Ltd. The COAT System uses advanced analytical technology, namely Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy and an integrated flow-through cell and sampling accessory. COAT makes use of a proprietary dedicated software interface, COAT SCAN to manage the entire lubricant analysis process.

By knowing how specific performance additives degrade over time, the COAT System optimizes the service life of lubricants. This is accomplished by replenishment of targeted additives which become depleted. Initially, lubricant characteristics of various oil reservoirs are programmed into the COAT System and used as reference data. Subsequent oil analysis is carried out by plant personnel assisted by the COAT System. Should the depletion of a targeted additive fall below a predetermined limit, the COAT System automatically suggests corrective measures, from additive replenishment to oil change, depending on the overall status of the lubricant and machinery involved.

A fully integrated, on-line version of the COAT System will automatically sample various lubricant reservoirs at predetermined intervals and initiate adapted corrections when necessary. For instance, a valve can be automatically activated allowing it to pump the required amount of the specific depleted additive directly into the reservoir. The COAT System is also capable of tracking contaminants, such as water, fuel, soot, solvent etc., present in the lubricant.

The COAT System is mainly designed to optimize the efficiency and useful life of lubricating oils. The useful life extension has been proven under laboratory conditions where additive replenishments have resulted in a two to four fold increase of lubricant life. Extending lubricant life through the use of the COAT System significantly reduces the overall lubricant disposal, consumption, and dependency on natural resources. The COAT System itself is environmentally friendly since lubricant analysis is performed without the use of chemical reagents or solvents.

The COAT System is available in two models; model C-1 and C-2.
