Markus (Mark) Cohen, Q. C., LL. M., was, until early 1992, a partner and co-chair of the Franchise Department of a large downtown Toronto law firm.
He restricts his practice to business law, concentrating on franchising, licensing and--as a Certified Specialist by the Law Society of Upper Canada--trade-marks. He is one of only seven Canadians featured in the 'International Who's Who of Franchise Lawyers', an independent peer-review publication.
A 1963 graduate of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, Mr. Cohen is a member of both the Alberta and Ontario bars. He received his LL. M. degree in Business Law from Osgoode Hall Law School of York University, Toronto in 1980 and received the honorary designation of Queen's Counsel in the same year.
In addition to membership in the Canadian Bar Association ('CBA'), he is a member of the American Bar Association ('ABA') Forum Committee on Franchising, the International Bar Association ('IBA') (Committee X - International Franchising), and the Legal and Legislative Committee of the International Franchise Association, Washington, D. C. ('IFA'). He is also a member of the International Trademark Association. He has written extensively and spoken at numerous franchising seminars organized by such diverse groups as the CBA, the Canadian Franchise Association ('CFA'), and the IFA, both in Canada and the United States.
In November, 1991, Mr. Cohen acted as a Vice-Chair of the CFA Legal Symposium and for that occasion prepared and delivered the afternoon plenary-session paper entitled the 'Judicial and Legislative Update: The Year in Review'. He is the sole Canadian member of the Board of Editors of 'Franchising Business & Law Alert' produced by one of the continent's leading publishers of law-related newsletters, and is a member of the Editorial Board of the 'Franchise and Distribution' journal published quarterly by Federated Press of Toronto.
In 2001, Mr. Cohen was a featured speaker at the Annual Meeting of the American Bar Association, Forum Committee on Franchising, held in San Francisco, on the subject of 'Franchising in Canada/La franchise au Canada'.
