Great Northern Knitters is a Prince Edward Island Corporation involved with the design, development, manufacture and marketing of high quality, fully- fashioned wool and cotton sweaters. The company is quickly building a reputation as the highest quality sweater maker in North America.
The company was formed in 1987 for the purpose of purchasing the assets and operations of British Woolen Knitters Canada Ltd., a nine year old knitting operation on Prince Edward Island. Great Northern Knitters produces some of the highest quality knitted garments in the world. The main production line is a range of heavy gauge traditional sweater styles and accessories like hats and mittens. Woolen yarns are imported from Great Britain and are the highest quality oiled yarns available anywhere. Great Northern Knitters is the only hand loomed, fully fashioned, fully linked and fully hand finished operation existent in North America. Unlike most knitting operations which knit yardage of material on automated machinery and then cut to shape and sew, each Great Northern Knitters' garment is knit fully to shape on hand operated Swiss Dubied knitting looms.
All increases and decreases on the panel are achieved by adding or removing yarns from the needles by hand as they are knit. All panels are then linked together using the same yarns used to knit the garments. Great care is taken to hand finish each garment. Although significantly more labour intensive, the resulting product is of unsurpassed quality and will literally provide the wearer with a lifetime of enjoyment.
