The Cord Group Limited

Since its formation in 1983,
The CORD Group Limited has assisted in enhancing human
performance in extreme environments through research
and evaluation of protection technology.

CORD has designed and developed a Thermal Instrumented
Manikin Test System (TIM) for evaluating the comfort
level of human-use apparel, including thermal insulation
and vapour transmission.

TIM is a robust, finished product intended for both research
and commercial applications, and is available for purchase
or lease. It is built to a standard design, thoroughly
tested and shipped to the customer as a complete package.
The Royal Air Force currently has two TIM manikins in
operation in Farnborough, England.

Testing the thermal insulation in immersion suits provided
the beginnings of CORD's own Testing and Evaluation Service.
Utilizing TIM, CORD provides thermal testing and evaluation
in aid of product research and development, and standards
approval for various apparel manufacturers.

CORD has equipment to assess buoyancy and flotation
characteristics of flotation apparel, one of which includes a
flotation manikin. In addition, CORD conducts human performance
testing on various protective clothing ensembles, thermal
recovery capsules for hypothermia casualties, sleeping bags,
rescue boat crew equipment, flotation vest, yachting clothing,
and snowmobile and windsurfing suits.

Recently, CORD has developed the TOM series of manikins (Thermal
Observation Manikin) also known as thermal comfort manikins.
They were designed for thermal analysis work in the design of
climate control systems and confined workspaces, such as,
cockpits or vehicles. Due t the highly transient and
heterogeneous temperature distribution in vehicle interiors,
these manikins must be more highly segmented and have a faster
response than thermal protective garment manikins. As well, this
manikin is excellent for the insulation evaluation of al types of
clothing ensembles, in air and wind conditions, giving both
sectional and overall values of insulation.

Thermal Instrumental Manikin Test System (tim)

Apparel Testing And Evaluation
CORD provides Testing and Evaluation Service for apparel manufacturers through field and laboratory testing on humans and manikins in aid of product research and development, as well as, standards approval. CORD is equipped to assess buoyancy and flotation characteristics of flotation apparel and conducts human performance testing on various protective clothing ensembles. The company has been contracted to test and evaluate a wide variety of garments --- from high-tech military products, to marine and aviation immersion suits, to leisure products such as snowmobile and windsurfing suits. TIM Test Include: -Still Air Manikin Test -Wind Tunnel Manikin Test -Stirred Water Manikin Test -Turbulent Water Manikin Test

Sweating Hot Plate
The Sweating Hot Plate is used to study the thermal performance of fabrics under steady state or transient conditions, and in the presence or absence of a sweat flux. The basic unit is designed to be placed in an environmental chamber. The plate maintains a constant 'skin' temperature and produces a programmable sweat flux versus time profile. Under these conditions, it measures the temperature drop across the specimen and the heat transfer through it. The software then uses this information to produce a heat loss and/or insulation versus time plot. The user may also select other data processing capabilities.

Water Vapour Diffusion Apparatus
The Water Vapour Diffusion Apparatus is used to determine the resistance of textile materials to water vapour diffusion. The cell, mounted atop a dry air supply system, holds the specimen and maintains a moisture gradient across it. The cell also has the capability of holding the specimen at various relative humidities from 0 to 100%. The water vapour diffusion resistance is determined from water reservoir mass loss measurements at a constant measured temperature. The mass loss and temperature measurements are made with separate instruments. The WVDA cell is suitable for making absolute measurements on all materials including those with hydrophilic finishes. Multi-cell versions are also available for production applications where high specimen throughput is necessary.

Test System, Thermal Instrumented Manikin

Thermal Observation Manikin
Highly segmented manikin designed for thermal analysis work in the design of climate control systems and confined spaces, such as, cockpits and vehicles. Features fast response, multi-section, dual axis rotation joints and a quick dis-connect joint at the neck.
